Since ancient times, people have used the medicinal properties of plants, curing them with decoctions, poultices, etc. But it turns out that in order to reveal the healing qualities of flowers, herbs or trees, it is not at all necessary to prepare drugs from them. Sometimes it is quite enough to be alone with them, to enjoy their company, to admire their beauty

From the distant past …

The healing effect of plants on the human body has been proven by ancient people. For example, the Chinese began to use medicinal herbs more than 3 thousand years ago. The ancient Greeks built a whole temple for Asclepius, the god of healing, where, among the mineral springs, there were amazingly beautiful healing gardens. There was a similar garden in Ancient Egypt - it was the embodiment of spring and new life.

Much later in Colonial America, gardens became a place for creativity and relaxation. The very first program for the use of plants for therapeutic purposes was created in 1879 in a hospital in Philadelphia. Then the doctors noticed that patients with mental disorders working in the flower gardens of the hospital garden were much calmer.

Modern approach

Over the past decades, the scientific community has rediscovered the unrivaled power of healing gardens. They can often be found in the yards of drug treatment dispensaries, psychiatric clinics, ordinary hospitals, near nursing homes and just in city parks.

According to many psychological studies, healing gardens help victims of violence restore their nervous systems, they are indispensable in institutions where people with Alzheimer's are found. And not so long ago, scientists drew attention to the fact that plants can help in the fight against the most terrible disease of our time - cancer. They have analgesic and relaxing effects on cancer patients.

For example, Claire Cooper Marcus, an American college professor and design teacher, had cancer. She always came to her garden in order to find consolation in it. Over time, the woman noticed that no amount of chemotherapy helped her as much as walking in the garden and contemplating trees and flowers. Now she is developing healing gardens for medical institutions, and her works are very popular all over the world.

Healing gardening

Probably many of us have noticed the effect on our body that indoor or garden flowers have. They are able to relax, give a good mood and inspiration. But few people know that they effectively heal not only our soul, but also our body. Scientists believe that various gardening activities are undeniably beneficial. Planting, weeding, constant bending is great physical activity that effectively burns calories and thereby makes us healthier.

Gardening can also help improve your horizons and your emotional mood, reduce stress, and relieve depression and anxiety. Doctors have proven that gardening can help lower blood pressure as well as blood cholesterol levels, which in turn reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease.

Everyone can do it

If desired, everyone can create their own healing garden on their own, with little effort. If you do not have your own plot outside the city, then purchase any indoor flowers you like for your apartment or plant such delicious herbs as, for example, sage, lavender, thyme or basil in a special container. As your seedlings gain strength and reach for the sun, they will give you many unforgettable moments.

Grow only those plants that are pleasing to you. If you are bothered by large bright flowers, then do not include them in your garden, there will be no therapeutic effect in this case. Give preference to delicate pastel flowers.

Be sure to find a place where you can sit and gaze at the healing garden. Set up a comfortable bench in the shade of your favorite corner of the garden. Among the plants, you can organize a special center for meditation or reflection with the help of a small original fountain, an interesting sculpture, a stream, a reservoir, etc. It all depends solely on your imagination.

Do not drive butterflies, bugs and birds from the garden. They will help revitalize it and multiply its healing effect. And to attract insects to your site, choose honey plants.

Let your garden become not only a place for growing vegetables and fruits, but a real healing outlet!
