The powerful taproot of the stock rose supports an equally powerful straight stem, often towering over one and a half meter country or village hedges. After all, its height can reach two meters. The stalk of the mallow is strongly pubescent and, as a rule, is branched at its very base.

Large, rough-hairy leaves sit on a stem on long petioles. The shape of the leaves is five to seven lobed, with veins protruding on the leaf surface.

Large flowers are simple and double with a very rich palette: white, yellow, pink, red, maroon, black-purple. Flowers are collected in racemose inflorescences.

Only dark burgundy and black-purple flowers have medicinal properties. Moreover, this applies only to tall plants. Currently bred dwarf plant varieties, even with flowers of the same dark shades, are not suitable for medicinal purposes.

Fruits are large serums that break down into numerous dry achenes.

Growing

Stock rose is a very whimsical plant. If planted on dry or too wet, poor or heavy soils, it will refuse to grow, develop, or simply die. But on medium-fertile and fertile soils, it will not sabotage. In addition, the stock-rose loves sunny places, and the soil moisture is medium.

Being a native of the warm Balkan Peninsula, the stock-rose does not have high winter hardiness, and therefore, for the winter, one-year-old plants require shelter with autumn fallen leaves.

Seeds sown in open ground in June will delight with their elegant inflorescences only next summer. If you sow them in a greenhouse at the end of April, then by the end of summer you can admire the flowering.

If you are going to grow a stock rose for medicinal purposes, then the appearance of plants with flowers of other shades should be ruthlessly destroyed before their flowers open in order to prevent over-pollination and loss of quality and purity of the variety.

Tall plants, in spite of their strong stem, sometimes require a garter to the supports, which protects them from injury in strong winds.

Use in the garden

Traditionally, the stock rose grows along the village hedges, often rushing into neutral territory behind them. It is "draped" by the unsightly walls of houses and outbuildings, compost heaps.
