Among tall flowers, the stock-rose (mallow) occupies a leading position. Fits perfectly into the garden design. Striking the eye with bright double inflorescences. A variety of colors allows you to create elegant, original "bouquets" on the flower beds. How to care for an amazing plant?
Structural features
Most specimens with non-double inflorescences are perennials. Large hybrids with buds densely stuffed with petals are biennials. Height, depending on the variety, 50-250 cm. Tall options require a garter to the support, landing in a place protected from the wind.
A powerful taproot goes to a depth of 0.5-0.8 meters, extracting the necessary moisture from the underlying horizons. Therefore, the plants have good drought resistance. For easy penetration, the soil must be loose. On heavy clay soils, sand, humus, peat are added.
Planting in a sunny location provides the stock rose with optimal development conditions. At the same time, the plants form a strong stem that provides abundant, long-lasting flowering.
Reproduction techniques
Mallow is propagated by seed through a greenhouse (April-May) or by sowing at home in cups or heated greenhouses. Early shoots contribute to the establishment of peduncles in the first year of life by the end of summer.
At the beginning of March, individual containers are prepared by piercing a hole in the bottom to drain excess moisture. Mix humus, peat, sand in a ratio of 2: 1: 1. The cups are filled with soil. A depression 0.5-0.8 cm is marked in the center.
Pour with potassium permanganate solution. Lay out 1 seed each. Sprinkle with earth, compact by hand. Cover with foil on top. They are placed in a warm place. Seedlings appear in 2-3 weeks.
The shelter is removed gradually, accustoming the "young" to the dry air of the room. Water it 1-2 times a week. Twice a month the plants are fed with the Kemira complex fertilizer for flowers.
Strong seedlings are obtained in cold greenhouses. In April, after the snow melts, they dig up the bed on the bayonet of the shovel, preliminarily scatter the sand over the surface to loosen the soil. Grooves are cut through 15-20 cm. Spill with a small amount of potassium permanganate (prevention of black leg).
The seeds are laid out one by one every 5-8 cm in a row. Sprinkle with a fertile layer of earth. Seal by hand. Cover with foil through arcs, creating optimal conditions for seedlings. Watered once a week. Weeds are weeded in the "thin thread" phase. Top dressing is the same as for home cultivation.
The film is removed gradually. They are planted in a permanent place at the beginning of June.
Planting, leaving
With the onset of warm weather, ready-made seedlings are transferred to the garden for hardening. At first, containers are placed in the shade of trees, gradually accustoming them to bright sunlight.
Dig up the site to a depth of 25 cm, removing the roots of malicious weeds. Rotted manure, ash, river sand are added to loosen the garden soil. Form holes in 30-40 cm. Pour water over.
Take seedlings out of the cups. Set in the center of the fossa. Sprinkle with soil. Seal the near-barrel area with your hand. The surface is mulched with peat or sawdust to retain moisture, create soft soil, and facilitate weed control.
The first time is watered 2 times a week. Subsequently, it is moistened weekly during dry periods. Twice a season they are fed with complex fertilizer Agricola. Remove weeds as they appear.
Early sown seedlings bloom in the first year at the end of August. The seedlings grown in the open field form a peduncle in the second year. Plants that have reached a height of 0.5 meters are tied to a decorative support. After flowering, the stems are cut, leaving 30 cm from the base.
Place in the flower garden
The stock rose is suitable for decorating the background of flower beds. Due to its high growth, it well masks unsightly places: sewer manholes, sheds, toilets. Planted along the fence, it creates an openwork "wall" of greenery and inflorescences.
Combines with tall delphiniums, asparagus, aconite, "golden balls", rudbeckia, phlox. It is a good partner for annual crops: cosme, sunflower, lavater.
Designers create beautiful compositions of group plantings of mallow islands on the background of the lawn, near the entrance to the house, gazebos, recreation areas.
Used by florists in bouquets. With proper care, the inflorescences stand in a vase for a long time. The buds gradually bloom to the very top.
Settle an unusual beauty on your site in order to admire terry garlands on high shoots in the second half of summer. Add bright colors to your flower garden!
