Velvets are of great benefit for the garden, vegetable garden. Experienced gardeners plant them not only in flower beds, but throughout the entire plot: they improve the soil, scare off pests, and attract pollinating insects. Plants growing next to the black-shaved beetle are protected from the Colorado potato beetle, aphids, nematodes, onion flies, cabbage whites and many diseases. Near tomatoes, onions, potatoes - from aphids, nematodes, ticks, next to cabbage - from whitefly.

During growth, the root system of marigolds secretes the substance thiophene, which is not tolerated by soil pests. For prevention, it is recommended to plant them along the edges of the beds, in the near-trunk circles, in the aisles. An effective decoction / infusion from whiteflies, aphids and spider mites is made from the aerial part.

Autumn preparation of the beds

At the end of the warm season (September-October), when the flower beds are vacated, marigolds are used to prepare the beds. Bushes torn from the ground are crushed together with flowers, roots, laid out on the ground and dug up. Recommended embedment depth 20-30 cm.

By spring, plant residues will rot. Such an event will help disinfect the soil, improve the structure of the earth, fill it with nitrogen and nutrients. In addition to the listed advantages, the treated area will be protected from pests, phytopathogens, putrefactive infections for 2-3 years.

Marigolds will be of particular benefit to beds for carrots, cabbage, garlic, strawberries, onions, tomatoes. If you plan to plant vegetables before winter, then the place is prepared in advance, after digging the flower tops, at least two weeks should pass before the sowing work.

Shelter for the winter

For warming for the winter, marigold bushes are used whole or crushed. To trap snow on plantings of winter garlic or in a rose garden, plants torn from the root are laid unchanged.

It is better to mulch the trunks of heat-loving crops with chopped stems / rhizomes. The collected plants are cut with a shovel / hatchet and laid around a rose or other plant in a layer of 4-6 cm. In the spring, all remaining vegetation is embedded in the soil, the stems are folded in the aisles.

The velvet shelter "works" better than spruce branches, since it not only traps snow, creates an air gap, but also scares away mice and hares, protects against pests, and fertilizes the ground.

Soil improvement

In autumn, removing the velvet planting, it is better to cut off the above-ground part of the bushes, and leave the roots in the ground. In winter, they will bring a lot of benefits.

Rhizomes, remaining for the winter, will prevent the leaching of trace elements, increase moisture and air permeability. The release of thiophenes will continue, the bulk of which is concentrated in the roots. These antibacterial substances fight infections and pests.

Strawberry protection

Marigolds help from pests, putrefactive infections, nematodes. On beds with strawberries, crushed leaves, stems, and buds are embedded in the ground. If the chopped mixture is put into the hole when planting, then for several years the strawberries will be protected from diseases: gray / white / black rot, white spot, fusarium, anthracnose, root rot.

Composting marigolds

To improve the composition of compost, velvet is an irreplaceable component. Before introduction, large stems are crushed with a secateurs, chopped with a shovel. After placing in a compost heap, the entire mass is necessarily covered with a layer of last year's compost and other organic matter.

Other plants also help to cope with diseases and pests: nasturtium, mint, calendula, chamomile.
