In recent years, square watermelons have become fashionable. Japan over 30 years ago, overtaking the entire planet, patented the technology. But our vegetable growers are not “bastard”. We adopted agricultural technology, built home-made containers, and use them successfully. We can handle any problem! We will learn how to grow our favorite fruit of an unusual configuration

Advantages

Square-shaped watermelons have a number of positive aspects:

1. Saving space during transportation, storage of finished products.

2. Attractive exclusive appearance.

3. Great demand, fewer competitors, high price.

4. The fruits are clean, do not touch the ground.

5. Do not fall off the table, perfectly holding on to an open surface.

True, you will have to work hard with this technology.

Training

The first step is to design and implement a growing mold. The main thing is to guess the size of the future fetus. A small container will keep the watermelon from fully ripening. Having reached the limit, he will stop growing or break the base with his onslaught. Large sizes are not desirable. The fruit will remain in a large round box.

The length of the edges depends on the capabilities of the variety. Early hybrids grow no more than 2-2.5 kg. We will test the workpiece on them. Then we will adjust it for other plants.

Initially, we will collect several cubes with a side length of 20 to 25 cm.

For work you will need:

• cellular polycarbonate (plexiglass);

• aluminum corner 3cm wide;

• four loops;

• two overhead hinges for doors;

• self-tapping screws.

Cut 6 blanks for the walls of the cube. The top and bottom covers should overlap the side edges. Corners are used only on vertical walls. Attach 2 hinges to horizontal surfaces and one door strip each. In the middle of the upper face, a hole of 2.5 cm is drilled. A straight slot 2 cm wide is sawn from it to one edge. Here the future ovary starts. We start sowing.

Growing seedlings

For planting in the Middle Lane, it is better to take early varieties of watermelon: Sugar baby, Crimson Premium, Ogonyok, Meteor. In early May, soak the seeds in a cloth for 2 days, pack them in a bag.

We prepare a mixture of peat, humus, river sand in a ratio of 2:: 2: 1. Acid medium, neutralize with dolomite flour and ash. We pierce the drainage holes in 0.5L cups. We fall asleep with soil. We make a deepening, lay out 1 grain in a container. Water with potassium permanganate, cover with 1 cm of earth. Cover with foil, put in a warm place.

After a week, the first seedlings appear. We gradually remove the shelter. We put it on the windowsill. It is advisable to reduce the ambient temperature to 16-18 degrees for the first week in order to prevent the seedlings from pulling out.

Additionally, in the morning, in the evening we put on lighting with lamps. We feed with complex fertilizer for vegetables 2 times a month. We water as the top layer of the soil dries up with a weak solution of potassium permanganate, to prevent the "black leg".

In early June, we plant the seedlings in the ground.

Care in the beds

It is more rational to grow cubic watermelons in beds with non-woven fabric stretched over arcs.

Advantages:

• less moisture gets inside the vessel, rotting of the fetus is excluded;

• creates protection from the bright sun, reduces the risk of overheating inside the cube;

• fast receipt of the first harvest;

• protection against night temperature drops;

• less water evaporation from the beds, creating a favorable microclimate inside the greenhouse.

Regular weeding, loosening at the first stage, will help the seedlings take root well, start active growth. Do not get carried away with a lot of dressings and frequent watering. In the second half of summer, these activities are stopped, allowing the plant to independently extract the necessary substances.

When the ovary reaches a size of 6-10 cm, it is placed into the container through the slot at the top. Water the plants under the root, trying not to get inside the cube. Having reached the border of the walls, the watermelon takes the shape of a square. Full filling, characteristic color of the variety, drying of the whip, indicates the readiness of the product.

Cut off the fruit from the mother bush. Open the bottom cover, take out the crop. Start tasting. If you guessed right with the size of the box, then the watermelon turned out to be ripe, juicy, sugary.

Having mastered the new technology, you can arrange for yourself and your loved ones a holiday of the "First Watermelon". To mark the successful implementation of the project. Surprise guests with the unusual shape of the sweet fruit. In the future, try a pyramid or other geometric shapes. The experiment has begun, because we are not afraid of small difficulties!
