In the generic name of numerous conifers "Pinus", according to one version, botanists reflected the resinousness of these plants, and according to another version - the tree's love to settle on steep rocks, demonstrating its power and high vitality. After all, the Latin word "pix" means "resin", and the Celtic word "pin" means rock, and both of these words could well become the starting point for the name of the genus.
In the species epithet "lambertiana" ("Lambert"), a botanist from Scotland, David Douglas, who is the author of the name of another Pine - Pine Pine (Latin Pinus ponderosa), immortalized the human memory of another botanist, an Englishman named Aylmer Burke Lambert (Aylmer Bourke Lambert). Peru Lambert owns a number of works in which many types of conifers are described, discovered by other botanists, including David Douglas.
The common name "Sugar pine" comes from the sweet resin running through the vessels of the tree. Natives of America use Lambert Pine resin as a sweetener for certain dishes. According to John Muir, a Scottish American and wildlife advocate, the sweet resin of Pine is preferred over maple sugar. John Muir was a big fan of the Lambert Pine, calling the tree "the king of conifers."
Description
Unfortunately, sweets are loved not only by people, but also by many insect pests. Moreover, they are not at all embarrassed by the power and strength of the plant, and therefore they calmly attack even the largest among the pines, the Sugar Pine. The officially registered Sugar Pine with a height of 82.05 meters, which ranks second in height among the registered pine trees, became a victim of an attack by bark beetles, having died in 2007 from their gluttony.
The superiority in height belongs to the now living tree growing in the American Yosemite National Park, California. The height of the tree is 83.45 meters.
The long, straight branches of the Lambert Pine are covered with bunches of deciduous needles, consisting of five of these needles ranging in length from 6 to 11 centimeters. At the ends of the branches there are large cones, under the weight of which the branches are slightly bent to the surface of the earth.
The Pine is especially remarkable for its large cones, the length of which varies from 25 to 50 centimeters, in exceptional cases reaching 66 centimeters. These are the longest cones among all conifers, but they are inferior in weight to the cones of the Culter Pine ("Pinus coulteri"). Although the length of the latter is maximum 37 centimeters, the weight of the Culter Pine cones reaches 5 kg, which cannot be said about the sugar Pine cones. In any case, standing under such types of pine trees with an unprotected head is dangerous to human life.
Seeds-nuts are also quite large, up to 1, 2 centimeters long. They are similar in composition to our homegrown nutritious pine nuts and are also eaten.
