Conditions for forcing asparagus
Asparagus is a dioecious plant. Experienced farmers note that representatives of male plants have more tasty shoots - those that do not form berries on their branches. And it is from such perennials that you need to take planting material for distillation at home in the winter.
Asparagus medicinal in one place can grow for about fifteen years. But for distillation, you need to take the rhizome from those plants that are 3-4 years old. For this, the processes of the peripheral part are harvested.
Those who are engaged in harvesting planting material on their own are well aware of how powerful the rhizome forms asparagus. And for distillation at home, the plant must be provided with sufficient capacity for this. Containers with a height of at least 30 cm, large construction bags, deep boxes are suitable as containers for the beds.
The bottom of the homemade garden bed is covered with a layer of light sandy soil mixed with humus or matured compost - about 15 cm thick. Rhizomes are placed tightly to each other, by the bridge method. From above, the planting material is covered with earth and watering is carried out. When harvesting in the fall, before moving to the house, containers can be stored outdoors, covered with straw or collected fallen leaves. Also, it will not be a mistake to place them in the cellar or take them out to the balcony.
Planting care in indoor conditions
The distillation process begins at a temperature of + 10 ° C. In such conditions, the rhizomes begin to grow within about 2 weeks. In the future, the temperature of the content is raised to + 18 ° C. One of the plant's advantages is that it is completely undemanding to light when forcing. However, you should be aware that you need to be very careful about the temperature regime. When the threshold is exceeded, asparagus significantly loses its taste - it becomes rough and bitter, and the shoots themselves are formed thinner than usual.
Planting care consists in regular watering, as well as adding fresh nutrient substrate to the growing shoots. It is better to harvest the plants while they have not yet looked to the surface and grow them under the peculiar mounds.
The crop is harvested on average once every two to three days. This must be done before the apical bud begins to bloom. Shoots are cut in different ways. With a certain skill, it is better to do this by burying the knife into the soil without exposing the rhizome from the ground. It is advisable to leave a cutting approximately 3 cm long at the root of the shoot on the rhizome. Careful actions will ensure at least five-fold harvest from one piece of rhizome.
How to use asparagus
Cut off shoots should not be stored for a long time - if you do not eat them immediately, they begin to coarse. They can be stewed and boiled, baked in the oven. Delicious dishes are made with fried asparagus. If you add a little garlic, it is crispy.
