Oregano ordinary is one of the plants of the family called labiates, in Latin the name of this plant will sound as follows: Origanum vulgare L. As for the name of the oregano family itself, in Latin it will be: Lamiaceae Lindl.

Description of common oregano

Oregano is a perennial herbaceous aromatic plant endowed with a branched, oblique and creeping rhizome. The height of the stems will be about thirty to sixty centimeters, such stems will be erect and oppositely branched, as well as obtuse quadrangular and soft pubescent in the upper part. The leaves are opposite, they are oblong-ovate in shape, can be either finely toothed or whole-edged. The length of such leaves will be about two to four centimeters, while the width will be equal to one to three centimeters. From above, the leaves are painted in dark green tones, and from below they will be lighter, as well as soft pubescent with short hairs. The flowers of this plant are rather small and colored in purple tones; such numerous flowers are collected either in oblong or oblong-oval spikelets. Such spikelets will form a spreading paniculate inflorescence. The fruits of oregano are dry and round-shaped, they will consist of four nuts, the length of which will be about one millimeter.

Oregano bloom occurs in the period from July to August, while the fruits will ripen in September-October. Under natural conditions, this plant is found on the territory of Russia, Belarus and Ukraine. For growth, the plant prefers forest glades and steppe meadows.

Description of the medicinal properties of oregano

Oregano is endowed with quite valuable healing properties, while it is recommended to use the herb of this plant for medicinal purposes. Grass includes flowers, leaves and stems.

The dry grass and flowers of this plant contain an essential oil, which will be endowed with a very pleasant smell and valuable bactericidal properties. In addition, the presence of medicinal properties is explained by the content of free alcohols, tannins, ascorbic acid, flavonoids, sesquiterpenes and garanyl acetate in this plant.

Means based on this plant have a calming effect on the central nervous system, and are also endowed with diaphoretic, hemostatic, expectorant effects. Means are able to increase lactation, increase appetite, stimulate the secretion of the digestive organs, bile secretion and peristalsis of the gastrointestinal tract.

As for traditional medicine, here remedies based on this plant are taken as sedatives for insomnia, headache, various neuroses, cholecystitis, biliary dyskinesia and gastritis, which are accompanied by reduced secretory activity.

Also, oregano is used as an expectorant and diaphoretic for pneumonia, bronchitis, bronchial asthma and acute respiratory diseases.

The infusion of this plant can be used for whooping cough, acute and chronic pharyngitis, tonsillitis and chronic tonsillitis. In case of periodontal disease and gingvitis, the infusion of oregano is used for rinsing as a sedative, anesthetic and hemostatic agent. This infusion should be prepared in a one-to-one ratio. It should be noted that the infusion will also have a calming effect when the state of the genitals is overexcited.
