Garden paths

The first thing that meets us on any personal plot is a garden path. Its main function is to link frequently visited places within one territory. Usually, the path begins immediately behind the gate, leads to the porch and in all directions: to the garden, to the bathhouse, and to the outbuildings - similar paths run up

Agree that it is pleasant to step on a well-groomed and durable surface, especially after rain or when there is clay soil around. In addition, neat garden paths will help to divide your site into functional zones, creating harmony and charm of the natural landscape. Harmoniously inscribed paths in the garden can be created independently without resorting to the help of a designer. To translate this idea into reality, you need your desire and affordable building material. Please note that not all paths will necessarily have right angles, in some places they may have steps.

Types of garden paths

Speaking of garden paths, a certain ordered dependence can be distinguished. Based on how the width of the path is used, the size of the path may vary. The pedestrian path from the house to the gate should be such that two people easily pass each other, so its minimum width is from one meter. Secondary paths can be allocated a smaller area, from 50 cm. Do not forget about the garage road, its width should be about 2.5 m, it is not necessary to make it solid. Build paths only for the wheels of the car, and leave the middle for the lawn.

If your section is long enough, it is advisable not to plan the central path in the middle - this solution visually splits it into two parts. It is always prettier and more convenient to lay paths along the edge of the site. To avoid stagnant water during precipitation, make shallow cross and longitudinal slopes. The cross slope extends from the center of the walkway to either side or one side of the house or garden. Longitudinal - it is formed for each meter of the path up to 1 cm. Remember that at the end of any path, and this is the lowest place, sediments accumulate, which need to find a way out and soak into the soil.

Garden path materials

To prevent environmental conditions from destroying garden paths, you need to take care of their strength by using different building materials and their combinations for construction. Choosing from a variety of options, adhere to harmony in the combination of color and texture of the path with the facade of the house and the fence.

Solid fill track

The durable concrete pavement is ideal for heavy loads. Such a path is made on a gray concrete base, which is further refined by laying decorative elements. As a decoration, take ceramic tiles, colored mosaics, natural stone, paving stones, shell rocks. Use different colors of material to give the decor a natural look. To fill the path with concrete, determine the length and width, take out the soil by 10 cm. Pour sand into the resulting depression, tamp and spill it with water. We mount frames for concreting approximately 60x60 cm in size, fill with mortar. After the concrete has dried, we lay the selected decorative element.

Natural stone paths

Backfill paths are great for the garden.

It is easy to create such paths: prepare a bed for backfilling with rubble, digging a ditch 10 cm deep. Lay geotextiles along the bottom and edges, reinforce the sides with border tape. Instead of textiles, you can use sand or concrete mortar. Pour pebbles, rubble, brick breakage, marble chips on the base. Match stones by size and ornamentation by pressing in with a rubber mallet. After placing the stones, fill the empty space with sand or liquid cement. It is not necessary to cement the seams, after a while they will be overgrown with grass, the path will look very natural.

Wooden paths

A favorite of many landowners is garden paths made of wood. This budget option is presented in two types: the use of wooden boards and wood cuts. The recommended material is larch, its wood almost does not rot. Use treated wood planks or thick planks of the same length on a prepared substrate. Choose gravel or sand as the base. Lay boards with a distance of 1 - 2 cm between them. It is better to lay these coverings in the fall, so that during the winter the soil settles and natural tamping occurs.

From chocks or tree cuts, the paths look very original, but they require more time. Treat wooden discs twice with hot linseed oil so that it does not rot during operation. In the modern world, sometimes there is not enough time for construction, although there is a great desire to decorate your garden with paths. In this case, use a temporary option - plastic tracks that are sold in the store.
