Many owners of summer cottages and private houses sooner or later start having problems with an outdated, non-functioning septic tank. Water stops running out, sewer services are not cheap, and they are required more and more often. There are several ways to solve these problems and we will discuss the most popular ones in this article
The wrong decision is to fill up the previous septic tank and dig out a new one. Until you figure out why the previous one ceased to function, digging a new one is meaningless and not economically profitable. The reason for this may be the wrong design of the septic tank (how it should be arranged correctly is well described
in this article), unsuitable soil, soil silting. Unsuitable soil, dense, such as clay and even more refractory, red clay absorbs water very poorly and silts up very quickly. Sediment from powders, other detergents, fat from dishes contributes to the formation of a film, which significantly reduces the soil's ability to absorb moisture.
Flushing
If the depth of the septic tank allows full pumping, then flushing will help a lot. A pit is raked out, a sewage truck brings clean water and, under pressure, pours it into the pit, and pumps it out again. With strong silting, the procedure is repeated. The renewed soil without precipitation and limescale will better absorb water and extend the life of the septic tank. This procedure is not contraindicated in working septic tanks, as a preventive measure.
Use of dietary supplements
It is advisable to start using dietary supplements in the warm season. This will give the bacteria an extra boost to growth and increase efficiency. The schemes for using various dietary supplements are different and are detailed on the packaging. Bacteria accelerate the decomposition of waste, separate the fine suspension from water, accelerating sedimentation. At the same time, the waste at the bottom also liquefies, accelerating its absorption into the soil. The effectiveness of this method will be higher if you flush the septic tank before starting, as described above.
The following methods are more expensive but very effective
Overflow pit
When the depth of the pit does not allow flushing, and the supplements are not effective, the only way is the overflow pit. An indent of 2, 5-4 m is made and a new septic tank is being dug in accordance with all the rules for maximum efficiency. From the new well, a tunnel is being dug under the overflow pipe at an angle of +/- 20 ° with an inclination towards the overflow pit. A pipe with a diameter of 120-150 mm is enough. Working principle in natural filtration. Heavy rainfall remains at the bottom, while water overflows into a new pit. Also, fat on the walls and limescale remain in the first pit. Thus, the time between calling the flushers increases significantly. And the overflow pit, if everything is done correctly, will not have to be pumped out.
Duplicate pit
When the location of the septic tank does not allow making an overflow pit, only a duplicate septic tank remains. A new septic tank can be built at any distance from the first pit. And the function of the overflow pipe is performed by a fecal pump, for which a pipe with a diameter of 50 mm is sufficient. This pipe can go, like on the ground, or be dug to a shallow depth of 20-30 cm. As in the previous case, all fat and lime deposits settle on the walls, and the new septic tank will perform its function 100%. The cost of a fecal pump is more than worth the cost of installing new sewer pipes.
Independent septic tanks
There are times when, for one reason or another, self-absorbable septic tanks are prohibited. For those who are just planning sewer drains, live in a warm climate and are ready to use water to irrigate their garden, there is a way to save on sewage services.
There are 2 septic tanks digging at a considerable distance, one of them drains water from toilets, and the other draws water from a bathtub, washing machines and sinks. Naturally, most of the water is collected in the second septic tank, which can be discharged with a simple pump into canals for irrigation of gardens, vineyards, etc. There are some
BUT! Choosing this path, you need to completely abandon the use of phosphate powders, switch to environmentally friendly household chemicals. It is also necessary to add bacteria constantly to the second septic tank, because bacteria feed on rotting products and the water will not have a musty, stale odor. It should be noted that this water is not suitable for irrigation from above or irrigation of low-growing crops, it is still wastewater. This method is widely practiced, but
is not anything legal!

Septic Tank Maintenance - Is It That Simple?
Recently, the owners of summer cottages and country houses when arranging sewerage more and more often resort to using septic tanks - in the absence of a central sewerage system, this is really the best option. However, it is important not to forget that the septic tank also needs proper maintenance. What does he need, and how difficult is it to maintain?
