Septic tank maintenance - is it that simple?

Recently, the owners of summer cottages and country houses when arranging sewerage more and more often resort to using septic tanks - in the absence of a central sewerage system, this is really the best option. However, it is important not to forget that the septic tank also needs proper maintenance. What does he need, and how difficult is it to maintain?

Why does a septic tank need good service?

Regular maintenance of a septic tank is designed to solve a number of important tasks: firstly, to make its operation more efficient, secondly, to remove all waste accumulated in it, as well as to prevent clogging and failure of its individual elements, and, thirdly, to prolong its service life through the timely identification and elimination of various problems.

And in order for the septic tank to always serve faithfully, it is important to try to maintain it at regular intervals. If the well has a standard volume and design, it is quite sufficient to carry out pumping out every three to four years. Also, maintenance of a septic tank involves flushing the pipes and cleaning the walls of the chamber - these measures are carried out at the same frequency as pumping. The walls of the chamber are usually washed by hand, and with the onset of spring, the wells are also mandatory checked for any damage. If you suddenly discover violations of the tightness of the structure, it is important to try to quickly restore it. And in the spring, the volumes of melt water are estimated.

What is the sequence of servicing a septic tank?

Servicing any septic tank begins with pumping out waste using a special sewage machine or a sewage pump. Next, the tank is cleaned, after which the tightness of the entire system is assessed. The next (and last) step is to inspect the system for the presence of various defects and damages, as well as to carry out restoration work if they are found.

Unfortunately, the sewage machine is far from always capable of pumping out too large volumes of sludge, so in some cases it is necessary to additionally use a sludge pump - this device is precisely intended for the primary pumping of waste.

When the well is cleaned, the septic tank begins to be washed - an automatic sink helps greatly to facilitate this process: by connecting it to the central water supply, the stream of water is immediately directed under pressure to the walls of the tank. And then they move on to flushing the pipes of the sewer system. However, a septic tank rarely needs such flushing, since pipes during installation (as a rule, PVC pipes are used for these purposes) are placed at a slight slope, allowing waste to easily drain into the pit. In general, the process of cleaning a septic tank, although laborious, is not particularly difficult, the main thing is not to overlook anything.

Who should be entrusted with the maintenance of a septic tank?

Sooner or later, many summer residents face an important question - to service the septic tank themselves or still entrust this important event to the specialists of the service company? Of course, the second option will still be the most reliable, however, maintenance and repair of a septic tank by experienced specialists requires certain costs. If you service the septic tank yourself, you can save a pretty decent amount of money. True, for its self-service, you will still have to fork out for additional equipment or pay for the use of sewage equipment.

Regular maintenance of the septic tank and timely elimination of all detected problems will allow it to last much longer than the manufacturer promised!
