Orange peas (lat. Vicia crocea) - a herbaceous liana-like perennial plant of the genus Vicia (Latin Vicia) of the Legume family (Latin Fabaceae). Description
Orange pea is a perennial herbaceous liana-like plant with an erect or lodging stem, 40 to 70 centimeters in height, with a soft shaggy surface.
Along the length of the stem, complex feathery leaves are arranged in sequential order, ending in tendrils for clinging to the support. At the base of the compound leaf, there are two stipules of unequal sizes and different shapes. One stipule is large and heart-shaped, the other is small and oval-lanceolate.
The compound leaf consists of simple leaves, arranged in pairs on short petioles along the length of the common petiole. There can be from 3 (three) to 6 (six) such pairs. Leaves are oval or elliptical, elongated, with a sharp nose, smooth edge, appressed hairy. The length of individual leaflets varies from 3.5 to 6.0 centimeters with a width of 1.5 to 3.0 centimeters.
On a long, hairy and sturdy pedicel emerging from the axil of a compound leaf, numerous, relatively large flowers are located. Each flower has a succulent short stem covered with hairs. The flower length can be from 0.3 to 2.0 centimeters.
The fused sepals form a cup of amazing beauty and shape, from 0.8 to 1.0 centimeters long. The calyx is covered with short whitish hairs, which give even more charm to the whole flower. Like a coquettish hat of fleecy wool worn over a red-haired head. The top of the calyx splits into sharp-nosed denticles of various lengths.
The most spectacular part of the Orange Pea is the 5-petalled moth-type flower. Its surprisingly soft and warm orange-yellow color is in perfect harmony with the green flirtatious cup; with a green, juicy, almost transparent peduncle stem; with green complex leaves.
The fruit is a typical pod-pod, brown-green in color, under the strong valves of which the seeds of the plant are hidden.
