Mouse pea is a perennial herb, the height of which will be about thirty to one hundred and fifty centimeters. Such a plant is endowed with rather long strongly branching rhizomes, which will be located in the uppermost soil layer at a depth of about fifteen centimeters. Numerous adventitious roots will branch off from such a rhizome. The main root of this plant penetrates the soil up to about two meters or more. The stems are thin and ribbed, they can be both recumbent and ascending, as well as strongly branching, and their length can reach one hundred and fifty centimeters. Mouse pea leaves will be complex and paired, they are endowed with six to twelve pairs of linear-lanceolate leaves, the length of which will be equal to fifteen to thirty millimeters, and the width will be about three to eight millimeters. Such leaves will end in a branched tendril and they are endowed with trefoils. The inflorescences of this plant are quite dense and endowed with one-sided flowering brushes, which will come out of the axils of the upper leaves on peduncles, up to fifteen centimeters long. It is noteworthy that up to ten inflorescences can be found on one shoot. The mouse pea flowers will be of the moth type, their length will be about eight to twelve millimeters, and the corolla will be painted in blue-violet or bluish-white tones, and sometimes such a corolla can be almost white. The fruits of this plant are oblong-lanceolate fruits, one and a half to three centimeters long, and their thickness will be equal to half a centimeter. The diameter of the seeds will be about two to three and a half millimeters, they will be spherical in shape, and can be either black or dark gray in color.

Under natural conditions, mouse peas can be found on the territory of the European part of Russia, the Arctic, the Far East, Eastern Siberia, the Caucasus and Central Asia. For growth, this plant prefers birch groves, shrubs, meadows, glades, pebbles, fallows, forest edges and sparse forests.

Description of the medicinal properties of mouse peas

Mouse peas are endowed with quite valuable medicinal properties, while for medicinal purposes it is recommended to use the roots, flowers and grass of this plant.

The presence of such valuable medicinal properties is explained by the content in the plant of such nitrogen-containing compounds as hydrocyanic acid and vicianin, carotene, anthocyanins, flavonoid-3-mono-rhamnoside kaempferol, as well as vitamins C and P. As for traditional medicine, here is a decoction prepared from the roots of this plants, it is recommended to use it for viral hepatitis. Infusion and decoction of mouse pea herb is used for ascites, edema, and also as an emollient, wound healing and hemostatic agent. At the same time, the herb tincture of this plant is used as a diuretic, and herbal poultices are used for inflamed hemorrhoids and rectal prolapse.

It should be noted that dry or fresh chopped grass of this plant is especially effective in the form of compresses for abscesses. A decoction of both stems and leaves has the ability to dye fabric yellow. Young stalks of mouse peas can be used to prepare various soups, as well as infusions and protein-vitamin pastes. It is noteworthy that the protein extracts from the seeds of this plant are endowed with the property of hemagglutination. The seeds can be eaten as flour or cereals.
