In recent years, not only aromatic herbs used as spices, but also decorative herbs that simply decorate our site have been increasingly settled in our gardens. How to properly care for them so that they delight us with their beauty for as long as possible?
Types of ornamental grasses
Let's first figure out what types of herbs exist. There are three main types of grasses: erect, slightly drooping, and fan-shaped grasses. By the way, there is no division by color, since any of the above species can have a different color in specific plants. The different colors of the leaves of such herbs are an additional decorative decoration. It should be borne in mind that in the fall, most of the plants that we use to decorate the garden change the color of the leaves to reddish-brown, bright yellow or orange-yellow colors from the usual gray-blue, silvery, green and striped colors. The height of ornamental grasses is different: from 15 centimeters to 3-3, 5 meters.
In addition, ornamental grasses are classified as annuals and perennials. Annuals need to be "renewed" every year, unlike perennials. On the one hand, it is easier to plant perennial grasses so as not to plant every year, on the other hand, if you want to grow something new every year, then just the same annuals will be irreplaceable.
Choosing a landing site
So, for planting, we need to select only those herbs that are adapted for our area, otherwise there is a very high chance that the plants will die. In addition, it must be borne in mind that almost all herbs love a lot of light and sun. There are, of course, shade-loving ones, but there are much fewer varieties of this type. The landing site must be chosen taking into account the above-described features.
Ornamental grasses care
1. Top dressing
Now let's move on to caring for ornamental grasses. These plants are unpretentious and do not require any complicated care.
Most often, ornamental grasses growing in the garden do not require additional feeding, moreover, some types of these plants, if watered with fertilizers, can change the color of the leaves to unusual for them. For example, blue or gray-blue plants turn light or dark green. It is advisable to feed only tall ornamental grasses. This should be done in early spring. Just apply some mineral fertilizers under the bush. Compost is also great for these purposes.
2. Pruning
Ornamental grasses are usually cut in late autumn. However, if at this time of year you do not have time for this procedure, do not be upset. Pruning of plants is allowed in early spring. By the way, spring pruning has one indisputable plus: you can admire the beautiful grasses on your site all winter.
3. Division of herbs
Herbs, including ornamental ones, tend to grow. As a result, instead of a beautiful ornamental plant, we get plantings "sitting" one on top of the other. To prevent this from happening, you need to divide perennial grasses once every 3-4 years.
4. Wintering herbs
Frost-resistant ornamental grasses can not be covered for the winter by applying spring pruning to them, and admire the beautiful plants all winter. But if you have thermophilic herbs, then you need to take care of them.
Tall ornamental grasses are neatly tied and covered with spruce branches, which are stuck into the ground at an angle.
It is enough just to cover low ornamental grasses with fir branches (you can replace it with straw, but it is unlikely to survive the winter blizzards and, most likely, will scatter).
And heat-loving plants are best transplanted into containers and brought into the basement.
If you follow these simple tips, then ornamental grasses will delight you with their beauty!
