Barclay Motley lives in reservoirs in Sumatra, Borneo, and the Malacca Peninsula. For a long period, it has not been possible to cultivate it in aquariums, but at the moment it is not at all difficult to do this. Placed in aquariums, Barclay Motli makes their design beautiful and unique in its own way. And for experienced aquarists, this beauty evokes a genuine professional interest. Nevertheless, it is extremely rare to find Barclay Motli on sale
Getting to know the plant
The hairy petioles of the exquisite Barclay Motli, representing the Waterlily family, are two millimeters thick and seventeen centimeters long. Large leaf blades on the front sides are entire-edged, rigid and naked, and on the back - slightly fleecy. Both in length and in width, they can grow up to ten centimeters. The bases of the leaf blades are usually heart-shaped, and their shape can be round or lanceolate. The bizarre leaves range in color from light olive to rusty on the back and neutral green to reddish on the front. As a rule, all the leaves of a luxurious plant are submerged in the water column.
Barclay Motli grows from egg-shaped nodules, which form basal rosettes of leaves and short shoots. Tuberous elongated rhizomes of this plant are extremely dense.
The graceful flowers of Barclay Motli contain a small number of stamens and sit on short peduncles, and soft villi are on the sepals of this aquatic inhabitant. However, in order to achieve the flowering of this exquisite beauty, all the rules for caring for her should be strictly observed.
This genus got its name thanks to the English plant collector and gardener J. Motley. A simple surveyor James Motley, whose primary interest was botany, searched for coal on the island of Borneo, but found several hundred previously unknown species of vegetation. Many names of new species later received the surname Motley - even one species of moss and as many as fourteen species of fern were named after this person.
How to grow
This rather whimsical aquatic plant takes root very well in aquarium conditions. Optimal for its cultivation is a soft water environment with an acidic reaction, the temperature of which ranges from 20 to 26 degrees. And the soil used for planting it must be loose and contain valuable nutrients in sufficient quantities. It is recommended to feed Barclay Motli with iron-containing fertilizers, for example, liquid fertilizers containing iron ions. Soil fertilizing from useful laterites will also come in handy. And under the roots of a plant when planting it, experts advise putting a small amount of clay. The water beauty should be planted at a distance of about 20 cm from each other, since excessive crowding will hinder its development and growth.
Barclay Motley grown in aquariums requires a weekly water change - at least a quarter of the total volume must be changed. As a rule, in aquariums, this plant is placed in the middle, as well as in the background. It looks great both in a group of congeners and in single plantings.
Good lighting contributes to the best growth of the beautiful Barclay Motley. Sometimes the leaves of a bizarre aquatic inhabitant cultivated in aquariums can decrease in size, and the reasons for this decrease are still unclear.
This aquatic beauty reproduces vegetatively: daughter shoots, separated from the mother plants, are rooted in the ground. But no one has yet succeeded in propagating Barclay Motli in artificial conditions with seeds.
As for diseases and pests, Barclay Motli can periodically suffer from snails and algae.
