Tansy (lat. Tanacetum) - a genus of perennial herbaceous plants and shrubs of the Asteraceae family. The genus includes more than 70 species, according to other sources - 120 species. About 30 species grow in the Russian Federation. The genus is quite large, but still unsettled, often some representatives of the genus Pyrethrum, Yarrow and even Chrysanthemum are included in it. Tansy is found naturally in North Africa, North America, Asia and Europe. Typical places are mountains, steppes, tundra, wetlands of rivers, fields, etc.

Characteristics of culture

Tansy is a herb or shrub with a lily stem in the lower part and a short creeping rhizome, which forms a large number of lateral roots. Leaves are pinnately dissected, oval, pubescent, have a peculiar smell. Inflorescence is a shallow basket of yellow tubular flowers. The inflorescences, in turn, are collected in scutes.

The most common representative of the genus is the common tansy (lat. Tanacetum vulgare). It is with her that many associate the whole genus. The plant grows everywhere as a weed plant. However, most species of the genus Tansy have medicinal, food, direct aromatic and decorative value. The second most popular species is considered to be Balsamic tansy (lat. Tanacetum balsamita).

The subtleties of growing

Tansy is unpretentious and undemanding to growing conditions. She develops without any problems in the shade and in the sun. The composition of the soil also does not matter, although a better crop can be obtained only from well-fertilized, moderately moist soils with a slightly acidic or neutral reaction. It is undesirable to grow tansy on compacted, saline and waterlogged soils.

Crop seeds are sown in open ground in spring (April-May) or autumn (September-October). Vegetative propagation (division of aerial stems and rhizomes) is also acceptable. This procedure is carried out in early May or mid-August. To obtain planting material, two or three-year-old plants are used, which are dug out with a pitchfork, cleaned of the ground and divided into parts. Delenki are planted to a depth of 10-12 cm.

The optimal distance between plants is about 35-40 cm, between rows - 50-60 cm (depending on the shape and type). It is not forbidden to grow tansy in group plantings, in this case the distance between plants and rows is reduced to the maximum possible.

The culture is simple to care for, needs watering and weeding, responds well to feeding with organic fertilizers. Plants are not afraid of frost, adult plants are able to withstand temperatures as low as -8C. Tansy is extremely rarely affected by pests, since it has a pronounced odor that repels insects.

Collection and storage

The collection of tansy inflorescences is carried out at the beginning of flowering. It is not recommended to harvest brown inflorescences. Inflorescences are used without stalks. Leaves are also a valuable material, although they are rarely used. Inflorescences are dried under a canopy in the shade or in special dryers. Tansy is stored in paper bags or glass tightly closed containers. The shelf life is 12 months.

Application

Tansy is known as a medicinal plant. It has been used in folk medicine in many countries of the world for hundreds of years. Water infusions of tansy improve digestion, enhance the work of the gastrointestinal tract as a whole, and increase blood pressure. Also, infusions of tansy inflorescences have analgesic, antipyretic, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, insecticidal and wound healing effects.

In cooking, tansy is used as a canning ingredient. It is added when pickling tomatoes, cucumbers and other vegetables. Often the plant is used in the preparation of homemade kvass. Also, tansy is an excellent substitute for hops in the brewing industry and ginger in the confectionery industry. Tansy is also used as a seasoning for game dishes.
