Maiden tansy (lat. Tanacetum parthenium) - a representative of the Tansy genus of the Astrovye family. Belongs to the category of medicinal plants. It is also actively used by gardeners and florists for landscaping personal backyard plots. It blends especially harmoniously with country-style gardens. In nature, maiden tansy is found in the Caucasian and European countries, Asia Minor and North America.
Important
It is important to note that earlier maiden tansy was called feverfew and was attributed to a different genus. However, after numerous studies carried out by botanists and breeders, all representatives of the Pyrethrum genus were disbanded. Most of them were reckoned to the genus Chrysanthemum, but maiden feverfew was renamed and reckoned to the genus Tansy. The family, in turn, remained unchanged.
Characteristics of culture
Tansy is represented by perennial herbaceous plants with a height of no more than 80 cm, which are endowed with a fibrous root system. The stalk is dense, strongly branched, crowned with two types of foliage - upper sessile and lower petiolate, complex, pinnately dissected, serrated, pubescent along the entire surface with soft (like silk) hairs. The foliage of maiden tansy has an intense smell, which is especially distinctly "audible" when rubbing the plant with your hands. In general, the smell is acceptable, rather chrysanthemum.
Inflorescences - baskets, consist of white marginal and yellow disc flowers, do not exceed 4 cm in diameter. Inflorescences are additionally collected in large shields. Long, abundant flowering, usually occurs in early July and ends in early to mid September. The fruits are represented by dry achenes of a brownish-yellow color, which contain a huge number of small seeds (they retain germination for 3-4 years).
Application in medicine
Maiden tansy is an excellent healer that has been used since antiquity. For medicinal purposes, foliage and flowers are actively used, less often stems. Tinctures and teas from the plant are recommended for use in diseases of the oral cavity, toothache, disturbances in the functioning of the gastrointestinal tract, diseases of the female part, as well as asthma and even psoriasis. Lotions from the infusion are effective for itching and insect bites.
Despite the large number of medicinal properties, maiden tansy is not included in the list of pharmacopoeial plants, nor is it listed in the Register of Medicines of the Russian Federation. However, its use is permitted in dietary supplements and other aids. In any case, taking medications and folk remedies with the participation of maiden tansy should be agreed with the doctor, because an allergic reaction is possible, as well as individual intolerance.
In no case should infusions be taken by pregnant and lactating women, children of any age and persons with disorders in the work of the cardiovascular system. Tansy for girls and those who have undergone or are planning an operation is not recommended for use. This aspect is due to the content in the plant of substances that inhibit the activity of platelets, which threatens blood thinning.
It should be noted the side effects of infusions and tea made from maiden tansy. If the dosage is abused, nausea and vomiting, some stomach problems, heartburn are possible. Long-term use, accompanied by abrupt withdrawal, promises headaches, nervousness, anxiety, and poor sleep. Therefore, it is very important to withdraw the preparations from the plant gradually, reducing the dosage.
