Helipterum pink (lat. Helipterum roseum) - a rather bright and interesting representative of the Helipterum genus of the Asteraceae family. Australia is considered to be the homeland of the species. In the same place, plants can be captured in the wild, most often they are found in the southern and western regions. Today, the species is actively used in ornamental gardening and breeding.
Characteristics of the species
Helipterum pink is represented by annual (cultivated) plants no more than 50 cm in height, which are characterized by weakly branching, dry, straight stems formed from a rosette of leaves. The foliage, in turn, is sessile, stalk-embracing, small in size, oblong, green with a grayish tint.
The inflorescences are represented by bright baskets, the tubular flowers of which are the smallest, light or bright yellow, and the wrapper petals are lanceolate, pink or snow-white, arranged in several rows, but not more than eight. The fruits of the species under consideration are represented by hairy achenes, which bear a large number of small seeds. The latter are suitable for sowing for 2-3 years.
As already mentioned, pink helipterum is used in breeding. On its basis, several interesting forms and varieties were obtained, which boast a huge palette of colors and large flowers. For example, the Album cultivar is characterized by large inflorescences with a yellow disc and snow-white wrap petals. Roscum is no less interesting. It also has a yellow disc, but the wrapper petals are deep pink.
Use in the garden
It should be noted that many inexperienced gardeners are still sure that absolutely all representatives of the genus, including the pink helipterum, are suitable only for creating crafts and winter bouquets. In fact, delusion is far from the truth. The species in question, and its closest relatives, look great in the garden, especially rabatki, large street containers and garden flowerpots.
Moreover, they look advantageous both independently and together with other flower cultures, in harmony or, conversely, contrasting in color. Pink "suns" look no less impressive in large flower beds and mixborders, especially in a company with ornamental plants crowned with silvery or green foliage.
As already clear, pink Helipterum is a wonderful dried flower. It is characterized by excellent durability and rich shade of inflorescences during the long existence of the winter bouquet. It is worth noting that the durability and resistance depend solely on how carefully the cutting and drying conditions are followed. Cutting, in turn, is carried out immediately after the opening of the first inflorescences together with the peduncle. They are hung upside down and dried in a dry and well-ventilated area.
The subtleties of growing
Helipterum pink is propagated by means of seeds, most often by seedlings. Sowing is carried out in the first - second decade of April. Under favorable conditions and good care, seedlings appear amicably and quickly, usually after 1-1.5 weeks. The picking of seedlings in separate containers (preferably peat pots) is carried out with the appearance of two true leaves on the plants, while planting in open ground is carried out not earlier than the third decade of May, preferably in the first decade of June.
Also, helipterum can be sown directly into open ground under a shelter, take, for example, lutrasil. In this case, sowing is best in early May. The seeds should not be buried too deeply, optimally - 0.5 cm. With the appearance of 2-3 true leaves on the shoots, it is important to thin out, observing a distance of 20 cm between the plants, less is not recommended. By interfering with each other, the plants will greatly lag behind in growth, bloom worse, and get sick more often. Care, by the way, is similar to all representatives of the genus - watering, loosening, feeding and weeding.
