In the winter months, when the prices for greens are slightly "bite", you can provide seven vitamins with your own strength from your own garden, equipped in room conditions on the windowsill. In this way, you can engage in forcing not only onions, but also other, very diverse spicy herbs - and parsley, and celery, and even salad chicory

Forcing celery

For forcing greens of celery, small roots are suitable, weighing about 70-100 g. Both leafy and root varieties can be used.

The container for distillation can be ordinary boxes, ceramic pots for indoor plants and other suitable utensils. If your bed will occupy a large box, a distance of 3-4 cm is maintained between the plants, and the row spacing is left about 5-6 cm. It is more convenient to drive out one copy in pots.

Before planting celery, the soil is moistened. It is a mistake to bury the root crop in a nutrient medium. It is not completely immersed in the ground; the growth bud must be visible above the surface of the soil. It is useful to sprinkle the soil on top with wood ash.

Watering root crops is carried out no more than once a week, or less often - every 10 days. Water is poured carefully, in a thin stream, so that drops do not fall on the leaves. Excessive humidity is not good for forcing greens. From this, the leaves die off prematurely, not to mention thus creating favorable conditions for the development of diseases.

The optimum air temperature in the room where the celery greens are distilled is + 22 … + 25 ° С. The first crop of vitamin greens can be harvested within three weeks from the date of planting of root crops. After cutting, the celery continues to be watered, and during the winter it will produce more than one green bunch.

Neighbor parsley

In one box, along with celery, you can also forcing parsley. And growing parsley in medium-sized pots is not only convenient, but also beautiful. In containers of medium diameter, 3-4 roots can coexist. In addition to being useful as a vitamin source, such beds will also act as a bright decorative element.

A layer of nutrient soil for planting is 12-15 cm. Short thick roots are chosen for forcing - such specimens are easier to place in small containers. Long spines can be tilted in wide drawers. The distance between the planting pits is maintained about 2-3 cm, the row spacing in the garden bed is made 4-5 cm wide.

The root heads are not covered with earth from above, the growth buds must be open. Like celery, after planting, it is recommended to sprinkle the soil on top with ash or sand.

During watering, it is necessary to avoid getting water droplets - both on the greenery and on the root head. Moisten the soil as it dries. Parsley does not like excess moisture in the earth and air. But it requires a lot of light. Therefore, it is better to keep the pots by the window, and ventilate the room regularly.

Like celery, the first crop of parsley can be harvested in as little as three weeks. During the winter, the roots give greens 3-4 times, and sometimes more.

Chicory salad

In winter, in indoor conditions, you can grow not only spicy greens, but also such crops from which a fresh summer salad is prepared! For this purpose, chicory roots are put on forcing. Unlike parsley and celery, the planting material is completely hidden in the ground. The heads forming in the shelter have a bleached appearance. In the light, they turn green and acquire a bitter taste.

The optimum temperature for forcing chicory is about + 15 … + 18 ° C. In such conditions, forcing lasts 3-4 weeks. At a lower temperature, when forcing takes place in the basement, cellar, this period increases by 15-20 days.
