Gilia tricolor (lat. Gilia tricolor) - flowering decorative culture; a representative of the Gilia genus of the Sinyukhov family. Homeland is California. The species in question received its name due to the content of three colors in the flower - white, yellow and dark or black-violet. In culture it is grown in to

Characteristics of culture

Hilia tricolor is represented by annual plants up to 50 cm in height, forming small openwork bushes during growth, on which bell-shaped tricolor flowers, up to 2 cm in diameter, collected loose racemose inflorescences flaunt. Today, there are several forms and varieties of tricolor gilia on the market, many of them are worthy of attention, because they are able to decorate the garden with unusual colors and abundant flowering.

Hilia tricolor blooms in 2-2, 5 months after sowing, flowering lasts until frost. Among Russian gardeners, the species in question, in fact, like other representatives of the genus, is not common, although the tricolor hilia can be safely ranked among the universal plants that are suitable for decorating flower beds, borders, alpine slides. Plants will transform the entrance to the courtyard, the porch of the house, the balcony and the gazebo when planted in pots or containers.

Reproduction, care and other subtleties of cultivation

Hilia tricolor is an adherent of nutritious, moderately moist, drained, neutral, loose, permeable, sandy or sandy loam soils. The location is welcome, sunny, light shade will not harm. Areas with thick shade, dry, poor, waterlogged and heavy soils are not suitable for growing tricolor gilia, the plants will hurt on them and will not be able to protect themselves from attacks by harmful insects, all this can lead to inevitable death.

Sowing of tricolor Hilia should be done in open ground in early spring (early May) or in autumn under a shelter in the form of spruce branches or dry fallen leaves. Shelter of crops is not required only in the southern regions and when expecting a mild winter with heavy rainfall (we are talking about snow, which will warm the crops). When sowing in autumn, seedlings appear in early spring. When sowing in spring, the seedlings hatch in 1-1, 5 weeks. With the formation of two true leaves on the seedlings, thinning is carried out. The optimum distance between plants is 15-25 cm.

Hilia tricolor blooms in the first or second decade of July. To ensure abundant flowering, it is important to systematically care for the plants. Moderate watering, removal of weeds and loosening, top dressing with complex mineral fertilizers are mandatory, treatments with biological preparations and herbal infusions against pests and diseases are also welcome. In general, representatives of the gilia genus are resistant to pests and diseases, in rare cases they are affected by gray rot, the fight against which is difficult and comes down to the destruction of diseased plants and spraying the garden soil with a weak solution of potassium permanganate.
