Gilia red (lat. Gilia rubra) - flowering decorative culture; a representative of the Gilia genus of the Sinyukhov family. Homeland and natural habitat - northeastern regions of North America. In Russia, the species is not particularly popular; it is grown only by amateur gardeners on their personal backyard plots. In culture, it is used as an annual or biennial. It is more often found under the name Ipomopsis red.
Characteristics of culture
Hilia red is represented by herbaceous plants up to 100 cm high with complex leaves, finely dissected into narrow threadlike lobes, collected in a basal rosette. The leaves are unusual, attractive, give the plant a zest, stand out against the background of other floral and ornamental crops. The flowers are small, red, shiny, collected in dense lush inflorescences. Flowering occurs in the first or second decade of August, lasts until the onset of frost. To date, many varietal groups and varieties have been created.
Arrow Series is considered to be one of the most decorative and common varietal groups; it includes varieties that are distinguished by long flowering and an amazing variety of inflorescence colors. They can be pink, salmon pink, apricot, peach, yellow, red, cinnabar red, etc. An interesting variety from the group under consideration is called Red Arrow, it is equipped with red flowers, decorated with spots of cream color on the inside.
Among all the representatives of the genus, gilia red is the brightest and most unusual, with its beauty it will outshine any perennials and annuals. Unfortunately, the red gilia has one significant drawback, it blooms only four months after sowing, therefore it is grown exclusively in seedlings. Hilia red is ideal for the formation of mixborders and other flower beds, both in single use and in groups with other tall flowering crops. Also, the species in question is suitable for cutting and creating unusual bouquets that will remain fresh for a long time.
The subtleties of growing
Gilia red, like her close relatives, is thermophilic and photophilous, although she tolerates slightly shaded areas with diffused light well. It is demanding for soil conditions, it develops best on nutritious, moist, neutral, loose, permeable, well-treated, weed-free soils. It is reconciled with strongly acidic soils, subject to prior liming. Heavy soils are not suitable for cultivation, but with good drainage, it is quite possible. Hiliya red will not tolerate waterlogged, swampy, dry, heavy clay and saline soils, as well as damp sites located in lowlands.
Caring for the crop does not take much time, it is enough to carry out standard procedures: weeding, loosening, fertilizing, watering and preventive treatment against diseases and pests. Watering should be regular and moderate, feeding is carried out every two weeks, using liquid complex mineral fertilizers, loosening and weeding is carried out as needed. In Russia, red gilia is grown as an annual, since it is unable to withstand the dampness and coldness of autumn. But you can save the plant until next year by transplanting it into an ordinary flower pot and placing it on a windowsill in a warm room.
Hylia is propagated by seeds and vegetatively, but the second method is used extremely rarely. Seeds are sown in open ground in the fall, covered with a small layer of fallen dry foliage for warming during frosts, this procedure is especially necessary if a frosty and snowless winter is expected. Instead of foliage, it is not forbidden to use spruce branches. Sowing can be carried out in spring, but in seedling boxes in March under glass or film. Seedlings will appear in 14-20 days. In the phase of 2-3 true leaves, seedlings of gili red dive in separate pots or in a greenhouse, seating them at a distance of 20-25 cm from each other.
