Fringed Caria (lat. Carya laciniosa) - a representative of the genus Caria of the Walnut family. Another name for Big Shaggy Hickory. The birthplace of culture is North America. In nature, Karia fringed grows in mixed and deciduous forests. This species is grown in countries with warm and mild winters, in Russia it is cultivated only in the south.

Characteristics of culture

Kariya fringed is a tree up to 40 m high with a straight trunk, covered with light gray bark, peeling off in narrow stripes. A bark with the same characteristics is possessed by the Kariya ovoid species. The branches of the shoots are bare, equipped with reddish lenticels. Young shoots are pubescent, with an orange tint. Buds are brownish, pubescent, oblong-ovoid, up to 2.5 cm long.

The leaves are rather large, compound, pinnate, consist of 7-9 leaflets. The leaves are lanceolate, up to 20 cm long. Fruits are obovate or round, have 4 convex edges (otherwise edges). The peel of the fruit is reddish-brown, thick, opening when ripe. The nut is round or obovate, with a thick shell. The kernel is light brown in color, has a pleasant sweet taste.

Growing conditions

Kariya fringed prefers loose, fertile, slightly alkaline or neutral soils. The culture of acidic, heavy clayey, waterlogged and waterlogged soils does not accept. Cultivation on acidic soils is possible only on condition of preliminary liming. The introduction of mineral fertilizers is required.

Kariya fringed light-requiring, but tolerates slight shading. The optimal distance between plants is 4.5-5 m. Plants do not tolerate strong winds; buildings or trees with increased wind resistance can act as protection.

Reproduction and planting

Kariya fringed is propagated by freshly harvested seeds. Spring sowing is possible, but subject to preliminary stratification with a duration of 90-100 days. Seed germination during autumn sowing is 86%, with spring sowing - below 60%. The optimum seeding depth is 3-5 cm. Young strong seedlings are transplanted after 1 year, and immature ones - after 2-3 years.

The size of the planting pit depends on the level of development of the root system of the seedling. Before planting, a small roller or hill is formed at the bottom of the pit, the mixture for which is made up of top soil and humus and filled with phosphorus-potassium fertilizers and wood ash. After planting, the soil in the near-trunk zone is watered abundantly, then mulched with peat or any other material. Correct placement relative to the cardinal points for young plants plays an important role in survival and further development.

Care

In the spring and early summer, Kariya fringed needs regular and abundant watering, in the future, watering is reduced by 2-3 times. The soil in the near-trunk zone is mulched and systematically loosened, but until the second half of summer, this will avoid delaying growth processes. Weed removal is imperative. Fertilizers are applied annually. Sanitary pruning is encouraged; it consists in cutting thickened, dried, diseased and broken branches. Pruning is carried out in the spring, but only after the threat of severe frosts has passed.

Application

Kariya fringed is ideal for landscaping garden and backyard plots. The fruits of plants are used in cooking, most often for the preparation of confectionery. Kariya fringed has valuable hard wood, it is used in construction.
