Water lily (Nymphaea) Is a perennial aquatic plant of the Water Lily family. Other names: nymphea and water lily.

Characteristic

Water lily is an ornamental plant. It is widely distributed in Russia, the North Caucasus, Ukraine, Azerbaijan and other countries. The leaves of the water lily are floating, rounded, green or reddish in color, 20-30 cm in diameter, located on petioles that go under the water. Flowers are white, raised above the water due to long and straight peduncles, can be from 5 to 20 cm in diameter, have a weak aroma. Blooms from late June to September-October. The fruit is a capsule. Water lily seeds ripen under water and then float to the surface. The rhizome of the plant is horizontal, long and branched.

Depending on the varietal affiliation, water lilies are of both dwarf and gigantic sizes. The largest representative of this genus is the Amazonian water lily Victoria. It got its name in honor of the beautiful English queen. The leaves of this plant reach 2 meters and can bear up to 50 kg of weight. Victoria water lily flowers have amazing colors and an attractive scent. Used for decorating reservoirs. In Russia, varieties of white, fragrant and dwarf water lilies are most often grown.

Cold-resistant types

* Snow-white water lily (or pure white) - is a plant with large dark green leaves, which reach 20 cm in diameter. It has a powerful rhizome and snow-white flowers with bright yellow stamens. Blooms profusely throughout the summer.

* White water lily - is a plant with large flowers (up to 15-16 cm in diameter) and leaves (up to 30 cm in diameter). The flowers can be creamy, pink or red, the leaves are dark green on top and with a reddish tint on the back. The root of this type of water lily is horizontal. They grow at depths from 50 to 250 cm.

* Water lily tetrahedral - is a plant with pink or white flowers, which reach 5 cm in diameter. They are used in reservoirs of small sizes.

* Fragrant water lily - is a plant with medium-sized white or pink flowers. The leaves are bright green on the outside, and reddish on the back. Differs in a pronounced and very pleasant aroma. It grows at depths of 40 to 80 cm.

* Dwarf water lily - is a plant with flowers reaching only 2-3 cm in diameter. The leaves of this species are oval, dark green on the outside, and crimson on the back. Maximum planting depth 30 cm, great for decorating small ponds.

Heat-loving species

* Blue Water Lily (or Nile) - characterized by a plant that has fragrant pink or blue flowers. Flowers of this species are distinguished by pointed petals.

* Tiger (or spotted) water lily - characterized by a plant with variegated underwater leaves and small white flowers (5 cm in diameter). The tiger water lily blooms at night.

Growing conditions

Water lily is a light-loving plant, prefers reservoirs well-lit by the sun. Currently, varieties have been bred that can easily tolerate shady places, but even they need sunlight for several hours a day. Depending on the variety of water lilies, the plants should be provided with an optimal area for normal growth and development. Some types of water lilies accept only bodies of water with slow flowing or stagnant water.

Reproduction and planting

Water lilies are propagated by the seed method or by segments of rhizomes. Before sowing, seeds are pre-germinated in warm water, after which they are sown in the ground at the bottom of the reservoir or in special containers, which are subsequently placed in water. Garden soil mixed with sand and clay is the best option for growing water lilies. Sowing of plants is carried out in late May - early June.

The strips (or pieces) of rhizomes are planted immediately after dividing on the bottom of the reservoir, or kept moist for several days. Delenki are planted only horizontally in containers, sprinkled with garden soil on top, and then lowered into water. Important: initially, the plant is placed at a shallow depth, and as it grows, it is moved to a greater one.

Care

The water lily does not require special care. It is necessary to timely feed with mineral fertilizers in granules, as well as provide good conditions for wintering plants. For example, in large bodies of water, water lilies perfectly tolerate winters without shelter. If the water is drained during the cold season, the water lilies are sprinkled with peat, fallen leaves or sawdust. You can also place containers of plants in deep buckets filled with water and bring them into your cellar or basement. Heat-loving varieties are recommended to be placed in aquariums and stored in a warm and well-lit room.
