When you first look at the thickets of multiflorous milkweed, it is difficult to understand where the leaves end, where the flowers are hidden. Outlandish plants have an unusual structure, which attracts landscape designers and ordinary gardeners. Let's take a closer look at interesting specimens?
Structural features
In an adult state, the herbaceous compact bush consists of numerous unbranched erect stems 40-50 cm in height. Oval-oblong, dark green sessile leaves are evenly distributed throughout the length of the shoot. The apical leaf plates are colored in various shades of yellow before flowering in May. They are the main decoration of the plant.
In the middle there are small flowers, covered with a common coverlet that resembles a bowl. A male staminate inflorescence dominates on one bush in the center, female pistillate variants are scattered around the perimeter. The umbrella-shaped form with a bright color attracts pollinating insects from afar.
After a month, the apical leaves return their green hue. So nature takes care of the extension of the genus of rare specimens. The fruit that has tied outwardly resembles light yellow mimosa balls.
Reproduction
For milkweed, 2 breeding methods are applicable:
• vegetative (by dividing rhizomes, cuttings);
• seed.
The latter option to a small extent repeats the characteristics of the parents, giving splitting in the offspring. It is in demand among breeders for the purpose of developing new varieties. Currently, there are hybrids with a variegated leaf color in a white-green range. The vegetative method retains the hereditary form.
Dividing the bush
In early spring or autumn, the plants are completely dug up. Gently shake off excess soil. With a sharp pruner, cut into sections, leaving 3-4 buds in each. The sections are sprinkled with ash.
Dig a hole equal to the underground part. Sprinkle with water. Set the seedlings vertically in the middle. Sprinkle on top with humus mixed with sand. Squeeze the soil around the roots with your hand, removing air voids. The height of the soil is left at the same level.
Cuttings
It is used in exceptional cases for the propagation of especially valuable varieties. At the end of June, lignified shoots of adult specimens are cut. Put in water to saturate with moisture for 10 hours. The lower end is dipped into the root.
Planted on prepared loose beds. Remove the set fruit. Cover with a film through the arcs. Water regularly as the top layer of the substrate dries up.
By autumn, an influx is formed on the shoots (rudiments of roots). The bed is insulated with leaf litter. In the summer of next year, a real root system is formed. By the end of summer, the young are planted in a permanent place.
Growing
Unpretentious specimens of multiflorous milkweed grow equally well in partial shade and in the sun. They put up with dry air in the summer. They have high winter hardiness. In one place they are kept for 10 years, forming lush curtains.
Plant care consists in regular watering during prolonged drought. They respond well to the superficial spring application of humus. At the same time, the fertilizer becomes a mulching material that retains moisture in the root zone.
Removal of weeds around the crop. Pruning of the aboveground part is recommended in autumn.
Place in the garden
Looks great in group and solo compositions. It is incomparable against the background of undersized conifers (firs, cypress trees, junipers, thuja). Creates a good contrast for ground cover plants: stonecrop, zelenchukovaya lamb, ayuga, cat's paw, arabis.
A bright yellow spot looks original among variegated host, astilbe, low barberry. Suitable for rock gardens, rocky gardens. Single-line rows along the paths will add cheerfulness to the composition.
Try to settle the multiflorous euphorbia on your site! Bring the bright sun into your wonderful garden!
