A series of double-feathery (lat. Bidens bipinnata) - one of the representatives of plants of the genus Chereda (lat. Bidens), which is widespread throughout the world. A series of double-pinnate is often called "Spanish needles" for the bizarre appearance of the seed head, and its double-pinnate leaves are successfully eaten by a number of animals, insects, and are also used for human food.
What's in your name
Although the word "Bidens" in the name of this species is translated in the same way as in other plant species of the genus Chereda, that is, "two" and "tooth", this species is reputed to be an eccentric among relatives, often flaunting its seeds, ending in tridents. In addition, its seeds are slender and longer, and therefore the name "Spanish needles" is very suitable for the plant.
The described species owes to the adjective "double-feathery" the shape of its leaves, which also differs from the shape of related plants, which are often covered with simple whole leaves. Leaves of the second order, while maintaining their integrity, are divided into smaller segments than happens in other species of the genus.
Description
The underground part of an annual plant is represented by a taproot, from which numerous lateral roots extend.
An erect stem rises from the root to the surface of the earth, which can branch slightly. The surface of the green or reddish-green stems is often bare, or almost naked.
The surface of the green leaves is smooth or slightly pubescent. The leaf plate can be double or triple pinnate, somewhat resembling the leaf plates of a fern. Leaves of the second order are divided into lanceolate, obverse lanceolate, or ovoid lobes. The base of the leaf is wedge-shaped, and the ends are obtuse.
The upper stems end with long peduncles with single inflorescence baskets. In the central disc of the basket there are tubular flowers with golden-yellow corollas. Each corolla has five tiny lobes, similar to the lobes of a human ear. Around the disc are rays of yellow petals, which may be absent on some baskets. The base of the flower basket is surrounded by two-layered green bracts, of which the inner linear bracts are much longer than the outer ones.
In late summer or early autumn, flower baskets turn into eccentric seedlings with long and slender dark brown seeds sticking out in different directions, like needles from a sewing lady's pillow. Only these needles end not with one point, but with two or three, or even more, short awns (as the botanists call them). In addition, tiny awns have beards pointed downwards, with which the seeds cling to random travelers running past animals to find a new place to germinate, using free passing "transport". After all, an annual plant reproduces itself through self-seeding.
Growing
The double-feathered string can easily adapt to a wide range of environmental conditions. The size of the plant depends on the fertility of the soil and the level of its moisture.
For all its tolerance, the Double-feathered train prefers places with diffused sunlight and fertile loam. In nature, it is more often found in drier places, located on rocky glades, wastelands, at the edge of the forest, along the banks of rivers. The plant propagates by sowing seeds, or by self-sowing.
Pollen and flower nectar attract bees to the plant.
Many insects, their larvae and caterpillars love to feast on the leaves of the Double-feathered train, harming the plant. Do not bypass the series of double-feathery and pernicious aphids, sucking juices from flowering stems.
Usage
The double-pinned string serves as a good honey plant.
Its leaves can diversify the diet of rabbits.
In addition, the leaves and flowers are used by humans for salads. They are added to soft drinks and alcoholic beverages.
The healing abilities of the Double-Feathered Train are used by traditional medicine.
