Aspidistra is a luxurious decoration for any interior

Aspidistra arrived in our latitudes from the countries of East Asia. The elegant dense leaves of the plant will be appropriate in any interior design - from an apartment in the style of oriental minimalism to an office space. And for those who are not yet familiar with this pet, the aspidistra will surprise with very unusual buds. The plant forms flowers on such short stalks that they barely protrude from the soil surface. What kind of care does this oriental exotic require?

Features of aspidistra

Aspidistra belongs to decorative deciduous plants. The long, lanceolate leaves have a short petiole that grows straight from a curved rhizome that looks like coiled into a ball. The color of the leaf plate is dark green, the surface is glossy and requires regular maintenance. Despite the fact that aspidistra firmly tolerates air pollution and dust, it is recommended to wipe the leaves more often from settling dirt.

Aspidistra rarely, but still pampers its owners with flowering. Although the blossoming buds do not have much decorative value. The flowers are bell-shaped, fleshy in appearance and only live for one day.

Favorable conditions for growing aspidistra

This oriental settler is prized not only for its luxurious armful of leaves. He is also famous for his unpretentious care and stamina. High humidity does not harm it, and the plant does not suffer from dry air. Top dressing is optional for him.

Aspidistra tolerates a lack of light well, develops well in rooms whose windows face the north side of the house. However, if a variegated variety of a plant comes into your house, constantly being in the shade, it may lose its contrasting color - light specks and yellow stripes.

Temperature regime, watering and feeding the flower

In winter, the aspidistra is recommended to be kept at a temperature of + 10 … + 12 degrees C, but trouble will not happen if the owners of the apartment are more comfortable in warmer conditions and the thermometer does not fall below + 18 … + 20 degrees C. Watering is moderate, but so that the soil in the pot does not dry out.

In the summer, it is useful to move the pot with the plant to fresh air - to the garden, to the balcony. Water more abundantly than in winter, but do not allow the earthen clod to turn into a swamp. The leaves are also washed with water. In addition, a warm shower is useful for the crown.

Aspidistra leaves do not have a high growth rate, but top dressing is used with caution and infrequently. If you overdo it with mineral fertilizers, variegated forms acquire a uniform green color.

Transplanting and reproduction of a houseplant

The frequency of transplanting depends on the age of the plant. Young flowers are placed in fresh substrate every year. Aspidistra, of more respectable years, is transplanted every 2-3 years, but every spring the top layer of soil in the pot is renewed. Only this procedure is carried out in such a way that the rhizome peeks out a little from the ground. Such work starts from March to May.

The composition of the soil mixture for transplanting is made as follows:

• clay-sod land - 4 parts;

• deciduous land - 2 parts;

• humus earth - 2 parts;

• sand - 1 part.

Simultaneously with the transplant, you can engage in flower reproduction. To do this, the rhizome is divided into parts with a couple of leaves. It is recommended to treat the cuts with crushed charcoal. The optimum temperature in the room during the rooting of divisions is +18 degrees C.

In our latitudes, the aspidistra does not have many enemies. The most dangerous pests are the scale insect and the spider mite. The latter makes the flower dry especially quickly, braiding the leaf plate with a silvery bloom. In case of severe damage, the plant is treated with karbofos, actellik.
