Usually the word tobacco is associated with smoking and an unpleasant cigarette smell. But in this case, we will talk about very beautiful flowers that will decorate any flower bed. And also, if you plant this plant on your site, you can enjoy a very pleasant aroma, because it is not for nothing that this tobacco is called fragrant

Fragrant tobacco is an exotic thermophilic plant that Columbus once brought to Europe from America. But, despite its exoticism, this flower is not picky and, with simple proper care, will delight you with flowering until the very frost.

Planting tobacco

I repeat once again that this plant is unpretentious. Therefore, it feels great when planting in the ground, and in the greenhouse, and at home for seedlings. Most importantly, pay attention to the choice of landing site. The soil in the place chosen for the flower bed with scented tobacco should be nutritious and light. You cannot plant tobacco in heavy clay soils. If the soil in your region is clay, then the site must be prepared for planting scented tobacco: spread a mixture of peat, sand and humus over the soil surface, then carefully dig up the ground so that everything mixes well.

It is necessary to plant fragrant tobacco in March-April, therefore, depending on the weather conditions in your region, we choose the planting method: for seedlings, in open ground or in a greenhouse. When planting in open ground or in a greenhouse, everything is very simple: prepare the bed, mark the grooves, moisten the soil and then gently distribute the seeds along the grooves, gently pressing them into the ground. Sprinkle on top with a layer of soil 1-2 mm thick. It is best to do this by rubbing the earth between your hands. That's it, the planting process is over. Now you need to monitor the humidity of the site and after about 10-14 days the tobacco will germinate.

Planting seedlings is also easy. Pour soil into the prepared container, preferably purchased, light, nutritious. Moisten, carefully distribute the seeds over the surface, sprinkle 1-2 mm of soil, rubbing it between your hands. Then cover the box with the seeds with foil and put it in a warm and bright place. The first shoots will start to appear after 10 days. If this does not happen, do not be alarmed. The tobacco takes a long time to mature, so wait a few more days. After the appearance of three or four true leaves, tobacco can be planted in open ground, if the weather permits.

Plant care

Once planted in open ground, scented tobacco does not require much maintenance. The main thing is to water it on time, weed the weeds and periodically gently loosen the soil without damaging the plant roots. It is advisable to feed it with complex fertilizers about once a month. And then the fragrant tobacco will bloom until the very frost, delighting those around you with its beauty and pleasant aroma.

Despite the fact that in America, where tobacco comes from, it is considered a perennial plant, in our climatic zone it grows like an annual. Therefore, it is advisable to stock up on seeds. You can simply collect them from existing plants, or you can purchase them at the store. My flower bed with tobacco mainly multiplied by self-seeding, but after particularly cold, snowless winters, I had to renew it with purchased seeds. In addition, when buying seeds, sometimes new colors are found, allowing you to "revive" the flower bed.

Interesting information: scented tobacco belongs to phytoncides. This means that it repels harmful insects from itself and from nearby plants in your area. But when creating a combined flower bed or when planting scented tobacco next to vegetable beds, keep in mind that it grows a lot in width, so it needs a lot of free space.
