There was a time when snapdragons were a very popular plant in urban flower beds. Then the exotic boom began, and a rather unpretentious and funny flower began to disappear from the flower beds. Today it is again in demand by summer residents and decorates front gardens, rabatki, mixborders and other types of flower beds

Snapdragon or antirrinum

Varieties of the type "Antirrinum large" from the plantain family are most widespread in ornamental gardening. Although it is a perennial plant, it is cultivated as an annual in the temperate and northern zones of Russia. It pleases summer residents with its abundant flowering from the end of June to the latest frosts.

Growing conditions

Snapdragon is a plant, although unpretentious, but photophilous, so you should not plant it in the shade. It is not afraid of frosts, its seedlings and hardened seedlings can calmly tolerate a temperature drop to minus three degrees, if such a decrease lasts a short period.

The flower is undemanding to the soil, but does not like dampness. In places where there is stagnation of rainwater, it either dies or grows at a very slow pace. Unpretentiousness to the soil does not negate the preference for fertile, organic fertilized soils, with good air permeability, on which it develops better and blooms more abundantly.

Reproduction

Snapdragon is propagated by seed. They are sown in the second half of March in containers filled with a mixture of turf, humus and sand, taken in equal amounts. Before sowing the seeds, the mixture is watered with a solution of potassium permanganate, adding 1.5 grams of its crystals per 10 liters of water. The seeds are not buried in the soil, but distributed on the surface, then covered with a transparent film or glass.

Since the plant is not afraid of small frosts, the seedlings can be planted in open ground in mid-May, not forgetting about the photophilousness of the snapdragon.

Usage

According to the use of antirrinum inflorescences, its varieties are divided into: casing, shearing and universal.

The different heights of the individual varieties allow snapdragons to be used in a wide variety of types of flower beds. Small and medium-sized varieties are used to decorate city and country flower beds, borders and rabatki. Medium and tall varieties are used to decorate green lawns in the form of separate color spots. Moreover, such a spot may consist of one snapdragon, or its association with other plants.

Snapdragon looks great on city balconies and window eaves. Early undersized and medium-sized varieties can be grown in flower pots to decorate rooms, or a porch of a house, a terrace.

After harvesting bulbs from mixborders, snapdragons are planted in their place. If the bulbs are not harvested, then the snapdragons are seated between them. It is also used for bordering tall perennials.

Tall and giant varieties are grown for cutting.

Plants with a compact shape and long inflorescences of large flowers resembling the mouth of a lion, sitting on a long peduncle, are universal varieties. These varieties are suitable for flower beds, a Moorish lawn, a front garden, and are also good for cutting.

Application in traditional medicine

In folk medicine, infusion of flowers and their pairs are used. In our time, steam practically does not exist, since Russian stoves have become a rarity in the country. It was in the Russian oven that a real effective steam was prepared, leaving an earthen jug with water and grass for the whole night in its slowly cooling bowels. Today, the crushed plant is simply poured with boiling water and kept overnight in a warm place, which, of course, reduces the effectiveness of the medicine.

Infusion of flowers helps to fight headaches, dropsy, shortness of breath.

Tea made from brewed leaves and flowers is recommended to drink with a sick liver and intestinal problems (with bloating).

In collaboration with corn stigmas and sandy immortelle, snapdragon is used for kidney problems and jaundice.

Snapdragon is also used for external problems. Hemorrhoids, skin ulcers, boils are treated together.
