Serrated hydrangea (lat. Hydrangea serrata) - ornamental shrub; species of the genus Hortensia of the Hortensia family. It is used for landscaping personal backyards and large city parks and gardens. It is a very attractive species, pleasing with its beauty from early spring to late autumn.
Characteristics of culture
Hydrangea serrata is a deciduous shrub up to 1.5 m high with a dense crown. The leaves are green, ovate, opposite, pointed at the ends, up to 10 cm long. The flowers are collected in corymbose inflorescences, reaching a diameter of 10-15 cm. Depending on the acidity of the soil on which the shrub grows, the color of the flowers changes. On slightly acidic soils, blue or bright blue fertile flowers (they are small) form in the center of the inflorescences, large white flowers with a bluish center are fragrant at the edges. When flowering, the marginal flowers become pinkish. Inflorescences of prickly hydrangea (a rare and non-frost-resistant species) have similar characteristics. The serrated hydrangea blooms in July - September. The flowering time is completely dependent on weather conditions, sometimes flowering is reduced until August.
Currently, a variety of serrata hydrangea, referred to as the Blue Bird, is presented on the garden market. It is characterized by marginal violet-blue and central lilac-purple flowers, collected in flat umbellate inflorescences up to 10 cm wide. Also, the variety is distinguished by beautiful light green foliage, which changes its color to attractive shades in autumn, and dark brown lignified branches. The variety boasts a long flowering period that ends in mid to late October.
No less attractive is the Preziosa variety, represented by low, upright-growing shrubs, which eventually acquire a spreading appearance. It has light brown branches, red-brown young shoots and green-burgundy foliage. The flowers are light pink or pink, collected in spherical inflorescences up to 15 cm in diameter. The main part of the flowers is absolutely sterile, fertile flowers are equipped with lilac-blue stamens. Like the previous variety, it has a long flowering period, usually until the end of October. Recognized as one of the most spectacular serrata hydrangea varieties.
The subtleties of growing
Like other representatives of the genus, serrata hydrangea is demanding on growing conditions, and especially on soil moisture. The plant prefers nutritious, drained, moist, acidic and slightly acidic soils. A place for shrubs is chosen weakly shaded with diffused light, open sunny areas are undesirable, as the leaves can suffer from burns. The culture does not differ in frost-resistant properties, for the winter it needs good shelter, to a greater extent this rule applies to central Russia. In the southern regions, plants can not be covered, but subject to warm winters without sudden changes in temperature.
Reproduction
It is very easy to propagate saw hydrangea, this activity is subject to even a novice gardener. The most common breeding method is cuttings. They are cut from strong shoots of the current year. Also effective: the seed method (but it is used very rarely, because it creates some difficulties), winter cuttings, propagation by layering and dividing the bush. All methods give good results. Varieties are propagated only vegetatively, especially varieties with a large number of sterile flowers.
Spring cuttings are carried out in early June, summer - in July (but before the lignification of the shoots). At the base of the cuttings there should be torture, and on the cuttings there are 1-2 internodes. Immediately after cutting, the leaves are slightly shortened, and the cuttings are treated with 0.05% indole-butyric acid. Then the cuttings are planted in greenhouses or pots filled with a nutritious and moist substrate, the top layer of which is covered with washed river sand. With good care, cuttings take root in 20-25 days. As a rule, up to 100% of cuttings are rooted when treated with growth stimulants and up to 80% of cuttings without treatment. Rooted cuttings are transplanted into open ground or left in pots or a greenhouse until spring. Pots with cuttings, if possible, are brought into a cool room, for example, in a basement or cellar, and with the onset of spring, the material is planted in the ground.
As mentioned above, dividing the bush is considered one of the most effective breeding methods. This procedure is carried out in early spring or early autumn. The hydrangea bush is completely dug up and divided so that renewal buds are present on each cut. This is the most important condition for successful breeding. Delenki are planted in the ground immediately, watered abundantly and mulched with peat or sawdust. For the winter, the delenki are carefully wrapped in non-woven material, it will protect against frost and prevent the shoots from freezing and death.
