Garden hydrangea is a rather sprawling low shrub. This plant is endowed with inflorescences of various colors, which reach about twenty centimeters in diameter.
There are only thirty-five different species in the genus; about twelve species of this plant are grown on the territory of Russia. It is noteworthy that this plant can be grown not only in the garden, but also indoors. It is worth noting that some types of garden hydrangea also have healing properties.
Features of growing and caring for garden hydrangea
It is noteworthy that this plant is quite unpretentious to care for. Nevertheless, for this plant, you should choose a sunny location, however, partial shade is also acceptable. The plant should be planted directly in open ground in the spring or autumn. The depth of the hole in which the flower will be planted should be about thirty to seventy centimeters. Plants should be planted one and a half to two meters apart. When planting hydrangeas, the garden root collar should not be buried. After the plant has been planted, it is necessary to water and thoroughly loosen the soil. Without transplants, garden hydrangea can grow in one place for about ten years or even a little longer.
This plant is quite hygrophilous, for this reason, in dry and especially hot weather, it will be necessary to provide abundant watering of the garden hydrangea. However, it is important to avoid excessive waterlogging of the soil and not choose places where water is stagnant in the soil for planting. The bushes of the plant sometimes need a garter, every year the bushes should be cut off, while it is recommended to remove not only damaged, but also weak shoots. Pruning should be done in March or April, when the buds are swelling. For the appearance of an abundance of small flowers, you will need to cut off the shoots two pairs of buds below their old inflorescence, and if you need larger inflorescences, but not so numerous, then you will need to leave two pairs of buds on the garden hydrangea branch.
Correct and timely pruning is the key to the abundant flowering of this plant. It is noteworthy that some varieties of garden hydrangea do not require cardinal pruning. Pruning for all other varieties is recommended in early spring, while the shoots should be pruned to the first pair of intact buds. In the event that the bush should be thinned, then it will be necessary to completely remove the shoots of the garden hydrangea.
Cardinal pruning will be required for many varieties of large-leaved garden hydrangea. After removing those inflorescences that have already faded, the plant will re-bloom.
Garden hydrangeas will need to be fertilized from time to time. At the end of May or at the beginning of June, the first feeding of the plant should be performed, after fifteen days, the feeding should be repeated. Once during the summer period of time, you will need to feed with chicken manure: in this case, you need to take one part of the manure per ten parts of water. In the autumn period of time, it will be necessary to spud the bushes to a height of about twenty to thirty centimeters. For the winter, the plant will need to be covered only in the first years of the plant's life, and after that the garden hydrangea can safely endure the winter cold snaps. However, for some varieties of hydrangea, a garden shelter for the winter will be required every year.
As for various diseases and pests, the plant can be affected by both pests and be exposed to a number of diseases. Among the diseases, gray rot and powdery mildew should be noted, as well as diseases associated with the decay of the root system of the garden hydrangea. The plant is attacked by nematodes, ticks, thrips and aphids.
