Raspberry planting can be done both in the fall and during the spring months. However, it is preferable to do this in October - due to the fact that at this time the land is optimally moistened and the seedlings take root better in such conditions. Thanks to this, next spring the raspberries will start growing with all their might, and the bush will develop and grow stronger faster
When will the fall planting be rescheduled?
Autumn planting of raspberries is recommended in the first half of October. This is necessary for the seedlings to take root. If this time is missed, the planting material will not be ready to meet the first frosty days and may die. The risk is all the more great in those regions where snow cover is not yet observed during the onset of early frosts. In such conditions, it is better to postpone planting until the arrival of spring, digging in the planting material for the winter. This is especially true for owners of sites with heavy clay soils. In the fall, they are too cold and overly humid.
In the springtime, it is also important not to be late with planting dates. In addition to the workload of the gardener-gardener with other work, raspberries will add hassle by the fact that with the arrival of spring, the basal buds release replacement shoots. And these tender sprouts will break off when planting. Another obstacle on the way to successful rooting and survival of the seedling in the spring is the condition of the soil. The catch is that by the time of disembarkation, the weather is most often dry. Therefore, raspberries take root poorly in dry ground.
Planting pits, trenches and high beds
On a small garden plot, your small plantation can be planted in one or more rows. When planting raspberries in a row, the distance between the planting holes is about 0.7 m. When there is a lot of planting material and the garden area allows you to roam, the planting scheme is calculated in such a way that there is at least 1 m between the seedlings - both in the row and in the aisles.
Planting holes are dug about 40 cm deep, the diameter should be about 30 cm. In some cases, instead of planting holes, it is more appropriate to use trenches or plant seedlings on hills. If the site is excessively wet, the groundwater is high here, or it often rains in this area, it would be wise to arrange high ridges. On soils that are not sufficiently moistened for raspberry bushes, trenches are arranged during planting.
Raspberry seedlings planting technology
During the planting process, they try to maintain the natural position of the roots. If necessary, straighten them so that the roots do not bend up. The ground around the young root system is well pressed with hands so that voids and air pockets do not form - the soil should tightly hug the seedling. At the same time, they do not lose sight of the position of the root collar and make sure that it remains at the level of the soil, and the basal buds are hidden underground - at a depth of approximately 2 cm. In the future, they should not be exposed after watering, which must be done after planting. Water consumption per plant is about 3-6 liters, depending on the weather and season. Water more abundantly in the spring.
After watering, the soil around the seedlings is mulched. This technique is very important, since in the autumn months it will protect the young plantation from freezing, and in the spring it will help prevent the rapid evaporation of moisture.
Different materials can serve as mulch. Humus, peat are best suited. But you can also use straw, compost, plant residues from garden beds. Planting is mulched with wood waste: rotted sawdust, clean crushed bark. Non-woven plastics can be used. Upon completion of the work, the seedlings are cut at a level of about 20 cm above the ground.
