The onion lurker lives everywhere. Most of all he loves onions and onions, as well as onion testes. However, it is no less willing to damage the horned multi-tiered bow, chives, batun onions and some wild types of onions. And adults, in addition to onions, can also damage garlic. The damage caused by these garden enemies is in the form of small bites placed in rows rather close to each other, and the damaged leaves gradually begin to bend towards these bites. If you do not take appropriate measures against onion parasites, you should not expect a good harvest of onions
Meet the pest
The onion lurker is a harmful beetle with a length of 2 - 2.5 mm, endowed with an oval-shaped body. Its long and slender rostrum is slightly bent under the body. The elytra of this pest are monochromatic and have a dark brown color, and the scales located at intervals fold into intermittent stripes of a pale yellow color.
The size of roundish pale white pest eggs is 0.3-0.5 mm. The yellowish legless larvae are slightly bent and endowed with well-visible heads. The length of such larvae reaches 6.5 mm. And the pupae, the size of which ranges from 3 to 3.5 mm, are painted in light yellow shades and spend most of their time in earthen cradles.
The overwintering of immature adults takes place under the remains of vegetation, as well as under soil lumps in forest belts, grooves, and on road shoulders. Adults are quite active. In the spring, they feed on last year's sprouted bulbs, and a little later they move to new shoots.
The females of the onion lurker almost always lay eggs one at a time, arranging them on the inner parts of the tubular leaves. Their total fertility is from fifty to seventy eggs. Development of eggs takes from five to sixteen days, and larvae - from fifteen to twenty.
The harmful larvae eat away the pulp of the leaves and skeletonize them without touching the outer cuticles. On the damaged leaves, you can see small specks and longitudinal stripes of whitish shades. With a significant population of onions in one leaf, you can find from ten to twenty gluttonous larvae. At the same time, the yellowed leaves dry out. Onion enemies pupate at a depth of three to six centimeters in the soil, in fancy earthen cradles. At the end of June, there is an emergence of adults feeding on inflorescences and leaf tissues. The one-year-old generation is characteristic of the onion lurker.
How to fight
It is very important to be extremely careful when harvesting onions and promptly destroy plant residues. At the stage of transition of harmful larvae to the soil, as well as at the stage of their pupation, loosening and cultivation of all row spacings are required. It is recommended to plant new onion crops away from last year's - observing spatial isolation will certainly do a good job.
On commercial crops of onions, as well as on its testes, it is allowed to use insecticides if there are from five to ten larvae per plant, or from two to four adults for each square meter of crops. It is best to identify the number of pests in the morning or evening hours - this will allow you to get a more reliable picture. It is important to know that the use of insecticides is unacceptable if onions are grown on feathers.
It is also noteworthy that in spring, onion lurkers are attracted by crops of perennial batun onions. In this regard, it is sometimes recommended to place onion crops near the areas where the onion grows - such a measure will quickly destroy the parasites concentrated on the crops of the batun by a mechanical or chemical method. However, there are also pitfalls here - if you do not get rid of the pests in a timely manner, then the crops of the trampoline located nearby can greatly contribute to the strengthening of the damage to the onion.
During the growing season, plants are sprayed with "Karbofos" - 60 g is taken for ten liters of water, and a liter of the resulting solution is consumed for every ten square meters. In general, when fighting the onion lurker, you can use the methods used in the fight against the onion fly.
