Sugarcane grown in our climate contains enough sugars for processing. It is much easier to get sweetness from it than from sugar beet. The quality of the product is much higher. Let's consider the process itself in more detail
If you want to surprise your guests with something unusual, then you should plant sugar cane on your site. The plant is quite unpretentious, responding well to care and attention. It will thank you with a sweet product in the form of syrup.
Cooking sugar
The reed stems are crushed. Transfer to a large container. Pour in cold water. Boil for 3, 5 hours, several times removing the green foam formed on the surface.
Strain the liquid into a separate saucepan. The remaining mass is poured with a new portion of water. Boil again. The second broth is combined with the first. The cake is removed.
The excess liquid is evaporated over low heat. The result is a viscous brown syrup. To prevent the mass from burning, aluminum or non-stick cookware is used for these purposes. Stirring the broth periodically.
The finished product is poured into glass jars. Cool quickly in a cold room. You can use the cellar or take it outside.
If you add 2 tablespoons of granulated sugar per 3 liters to the syrup, then rapid crystallization will begin. The mass will look like natural honey.
There is a second way to process sugar cane. Juice is squeezed out of the stems (about 200 g is obtained from 1 plant). Then it is evaporated to a state of ductility.
Store the workpieces under plastic covers in the basement or cellar. For long-term storage, hot syrup is poured into steam-heated jars. Roll up under sterilized iron lids. In this case, the period of use increases to several years.
Usage
Cane sugar is the basis for jams, compotes, marmalade and other dishes containing sweet ingredients. Its taste is slightly different from the product made from sugar beets.
Getting seeds
Seed plants are harvested a month later than food plants. The simultaneous production of seeds and sugar is not practiced. It takes much longer for the planting material to fully ripen.
Panicles are cut in the phase of full ripeness, tied in bundles of several pieces. Hang in a dry, well-ventilated place. Ripe seeds are partially poured out at the end of drying. Therefore, in order to avoid the loss of valuable material, fabric is laid on the floor.
Grain is stored in panicles until spring. Before use, they are threshed, cleaned of debris, and germination is checked at home.
From 1 plant, about 600 full-fledged seeds are obtained with proper care. This amount is enough to sow one hundred square meters of land. Therefore, for your own needs, it is enough to have 2-3 bushes.
Seeds quickly lose their germination. Only fresh planting material is used for sowing.
Waste-free production
All parts of the cane contain sugary substances. If desired, juice is squeezed out of the leaves using a press. Then it is subjected to evaporation. Its quality will be slightly lower than that obtained from the stems.
In personal subsidiary plots, leaves, cake, shoots harvested in summer are used for food for pets. The pigs really like him.
Unripe seeds from the first batch are fed to the bird. Brooms are knitted from the panicles remaining after threshing.
Stems from seed plants are an excellent material for crafts, furniture making.
The juice is used for cosmetic purposes to rejuvenate and cleanse the skin of the face.
As you can see, the process of processing and growing is quite feasible at home. It remains only to purchase seeds to try out new technologies ourselves.
