Porch as a structural element

Common characteristics are steps and a canopy over them. The main purpose is to protect the entrance from rain, in winter from snow drifts. In summer, it can partially function as a gazebo, you can leave shoes, household accessories on it.

There are many design solutions that go as far as merging with an open terrace. The main three types of porch are more common: attached, simplified and built-in. Any materials can be used: wood, concrete, brick, metal. In any case, the creation of a project should take into account the appearance, dimensions of the house and ensure a harmonious entry into the overall structure.

DIY wooden porch

Here, regardless of the design, all the elements of a standard classic porch are present: a canopy, a railing, a platform, a staircase, a support or a foundation.

Having compiled the project, you need to calculate the distance from the ground to the floor of the site. If the height is small (50-70 cm), then you can do without a foundation - the base will be supporting structures made of iron or wooden pillars. The pile construction assumes a depth of 80 cm, with fixation with concrete mortar. Before this, the tree should be treated with bitumen. The span between the piles is maintained about 50 cm, if the length of the porch is large, then to reduce the load, the distance is reduced to 30 cm. The easiest way is to erect on a foundation of concrete, poured along the entire perimeter.

For fixing the lag, the “thorn-groove” technique is used with the use of metal elements, such as a corner. The structure is attached to the outer side of the foundation of the house using horizontal logs and special fasteners. A transverse beam is laid on the base and a rough floor is laid.

Steps are made mortise or overhead, called kosoura. Kosour is a support bar equipped with a comb for installing steps. It is done quite simply: the length corresponds to the width of the step, the depth is equal to the thickness. For standard stairs, two combs are enough, for wide ones, from 120 cm, three or more are required. It is better to fill the support platform under the span with concrete on a gravel-sand cushion. If you have three steps, then you can put several paving slabs under them.

A wooden porch can be attached to a house made of rounded logs, a carriage lined with vinyl siding, polymer slabs under a stone, facade panels, clapboard. A closed porch always looks better from a bar.

Decorative finishing of a wooden porch

You can give individuality to your home by complementing the porch with graceful balusters, railings, wooden overlays. The large space can be equipped with removable glass frames. The technique of combining different colors works well, for example, the lining on the posts or the railings are painted in a different color.

Concrete porch

By ditching the timber structure and using concrete, you get a durable, modern design. Such a structure will require a solid foundation. We make the formwork, preferably with the inclusion of reinforcement, fill it with cement, sand concrete, M200 mortar. You can replace a monolithic structure with blocks, it is faster and easier. If steps are needed, then they are poured separately, according to the selected form. Standard characteristics of the steps: h - 15 cm, width - 30, length - 120-150.

The monolithic base is tiled, the sidewalls are laid out with stone panels. Further, decorative elements are installed - handrails, racks. Concrete is ideally combined with metal, so the decor is best made of iron. You can buy ready-made forged products in the form of curls, screw rods, they will add style and solidity. They can also be used to fasten the handrails, and be used as part of the decoration under the visor.

A canopy over the porch

The visor performs a decorative function and protects from precipitation, has two types: attached to the wall and free-standing. In appearance it is lean, arched, gable, straight, arched, inclined. The choice of design and material depends on the size of the porch area. There are rules in the technical parameters:

- the canopy must be erected at a certain height from the upper jamb of the door. It is required to maintain a distance of 20-30 cm above the front door;

- the width cannot be made less than the floor area.

The best, often used option is a reinforcing attachment to the wall of the house. It is attached to a wooden surface using metal corners. The frame is made of wood or iron. The covering is selected in accordance with the design of the house, for example: metal tiles, colored polycarbonate, corrugated board.
