Moistening the substrate under the houseplant is the most important component of caring for our pets. Ignorance of the basics and subtleties of this process can lead to the death of your beloved flower. What determines the volume and frequency of watering? This is based on many factors: this is the season, and the phase of plant development, and the air temperature, as well as other equally important nuances
Factors that affect the amount of watering
Most indoor plants need to be watered daily in the spring and summer. The hotter the day is, the more moisture the flower needs. In the fall, the frequency of watering is reduced. At this time of the year, the earth is moistened in a day or two. Well, in winter, in cold weather, during the dormant period, flowers least of all need water.
Another important rule to remember is that the flower is watered more often and more during its active growing season. When growth rates decline, irrigation volumes begin to decrease. It is enough to irrigate the soil so that it is barely wet. This is a very important point in caring for indoor plants, because dormant periods for different indoor plants do not always occur at the same time. And a short-term drought is not so terrible for pets in pots as an excess of moisture and stagnant water - in such conditions, a favorable environment is formed for the development of fungal diseases, decay of roots and other misfortunes.
The frequency and volume of water for irrigation must also be correlated with those components of the soil substrate in which different plant species grow. So, it should be borne in mind that heavy clay soil retains moisture longer. And the sandy soil mixture has a lighter structure and therefore dries faster. There is also a relationship between the rate of evaporation of water and the size of the pot. Flowers in small containers will have a higher watering frequency.
How do I know when to water?
Of course, you can't have a rigid schedule for watering your plants. You need to learn to recognize the need for flowers in the next moisturizing. To do this, pay attention to the following signs:
• the shade of moist soil is usually darker than dry soil, but this moment can be deceiving, since it is impossible to determine the state of the lower layers of the earth by eye;
• water has its own mass, and in the process of evaporation its specific gravity becomes less, and therefore the pot is lighter;
• the pot itself can tell the grower about the state of the soil in it at the moment, you just need to learn to listen to it. To do this, tap on it with another pot. A loud, ringing knock indicates that the soil is dry, and a dull sound - that the earth has not yet had time to dry.
Among other things, the appearance of a houseplant cannot be discounted. As a rule, a lack of watering can be recognized by sluggish leaves.
How to moisturize the soil under plants
Most flowers are watered slowly around the edge of the pot. If this is done carelessly and carelessly, water erodes the surface of the earth, drops fall on the leaves, and this leads to illness and burns.
If the soil mixture in the pot is composed correctly, then the water freely penetrates through all layers and drainage, after which the residues flow down to the sump. However, there is no need to rush to empty it. This is done after one and a half to two hours, because during this time some volume of water is again absorbed by the earth back.
But this rule also has its exceptions. So, in palms, ficuses, dracaena, indoor lemons and oranges in the summer, water is left in pallets until it is completely absorbed by the ground. Ferns, Cyperus, and other people from marshlands thrive when water is always present in the trays. In addition, ferns love spraying, and cyperuses are placed in aquariums to maintain an optimal microclimate.
