Many summer residents, gardeners are engaged in the cultivation of strawberries, we can say that everything. After all, how many vitamins and microelements this berry contains! For example, in terms of vitamin C content, strawberries are not inferior even to citrus fruits, and the calcium content is completely absorbed by the human body. Ripe fresh berries are packed with antioxidants, sugar, citric and malic acid, manganese, iron, phosphorus and many other useful substances.

Through trial and error, many achieve a good fruitful harvest, and some remain bewildered, not understanding the reasons for a small harvest, such a seemingly picky berry. There can be many reasons.

By the way, decades earlier strawberries grew only in countries with mild climates, but now you can find this unusually useful berry even far beyond the Urals and grow it in the open field. Strawberries, although picky, but require attention and respect!

Preparing the soil

Much attention must be paid to the landing area. It is desirable that the site be free of trees and shrubs that create shade. The best soil for planting strawberries is considered to be light loamy and sandy loamy slightly acidic soils. Excessively acidic, muddy and waterlogged are considered unsuitable. The choice of the place of the previous plant culture is also important. You can not plant strawberries after: potato cucumbers, eggplant, cabbage, pepper. The predecessors can be: beets, onions, green crops, carrots, radishes.

Soil preparation consists in leveling and loosening the top layer, removing weeds and enriching the soil with fertilizers. First of all, you need to free the soil from weeds, then dig up the beds about 20-30 cm deep and fertilize accordingly. Fertilizers will provide plants with nutrients, as well as improve the structure of the soil. The soil is ready for planting strawberries.

Planting strawberries

Planting strawberries is best done in spring (early April) before dry weather or in autumn (starting from late August), if you still decide to plant strawberries in summer, then it is advisable to do this in cloudy weather, in extreme cases in the evening (so that the plant can acclimatize per night). Strawberries are planted with seedlings (rosettes), it is possible with seeds, but more often, and still, it is more convenient with seedlings. If you buy seedlings and not grow them yourself, then it is advisable to process them before planting. Based on 10 liters of water, we take 1 tsp. copper sulfate and 3 tbsp. l. table salt, immersed in the prepared solution of the socket for 15 minutes. We take out, wash the roots with water and the seedlings are ready for planting in the garden.

For planting, take healthy seedlings with a fibrous root system. Do not plant the bushes too close to each other, as the strawberries will hurt and bear fruit poorly. After all, we wish a lush harvest, and not two bushes on the entire site! If the roots of the seedlings are too long, they must be cut to 6-7 cm. When planting, it is important that the roots do not bend up and fit snugly to the ground in the hole. It is best to place strawberry seedlings in beds 50 cm wide, in two rows, with a distance between rows of 30-35 cm, and between plants at least 20 cm each. The seedlings themselves can be planted in a checkerboard pattern, it is very convenient. The largest harvest is obtained in the second year of fruiting, in the third year the berries become slightly smaller in size, although the amount of the harvested crop remains unchanged, as in the second year, and in the fourth year it decreases, and the amount of harvest and berries become very small. Therefore, in order to get a good harvest, it is advisable to start planting new seedlings in the third year.

Watering strawberries

It is not recommended to water strawberries too often and in small doses, as this can lead to fungal infections of the plants. Strawberries are watered abundantly, but once every 7-14 days. Water for irrigation should be warm enough (18-20 ° C), since she does not like cold water. Watering strawberries with a watering can is the most suitable method for watering small beds.

Harvesting

It is best to pick strawberries in the morning, when it is not too hot. Berries should be taken with a stalk and a cup, trying not to touch the pulp.

We enjoy our work, we replenish our body with useful vitamins and microelements!
