Description
Blue Kwandong is a fruit tree with a very dense cone-shaped crown. Under natural conditions, it can reach a height of thirty-six meters, and in culture, its height almost never exceeds six to seven meters. However, it is much more problematic to harvest from taller trees.
The diameter of the trunks of mature trees can reach eighty centimeters, so it is simply impossible not to notice the blue quandong in the picturesque rainforests. Moreover, these trees are covered with a spectacular grayish-whitish bark, which favorably distinguishes them against the background of all other trees growing in the neighborhood.
Glossy leaves of blue kwandong are dark green above, and below they are painted in lighter colors. All leaves are grouped into small bunches located at the ends of the shoots. In width, they usually reach four to six centimeters, and their length varies from twelve to seventeen centimeters. Very young leaves boast a surprisingly pleasant red color with a magnificent bronze tint.
Pink or white flowers are characterized by a bell-shaped shape and are located in places of fallen leaves along the branches. Their aroma vaguely resembles the aroma of licorice, and the flowering of this culture can be admired from spring to early summer.
The blue quandong is characterized by very abundant fruiting, and this plant gives such rich yields every year. Its edible fruits are colored in bright blue tones and reach a diameter of two to three centimeters. Each fruit contains a single seed inside, enclosed in a very strong shell with deep convolutions. It is thanks to such shells that the seeds are never digested in the gastrointestinal tract of fruit-eating animals, which greatly contributes to the further spread of the plant.
Where grows
Australia is considered to be the birthplace of blue Kwandong, in particular, the states of New South Wales and Queensland. It is quite possible to meet this plant at an altitude of 1100 meters above sea level.
Application
Blue Kwandong fruits are bitter, so only Australian aborigines eat them. In addition, the local population often makes special pasta, pie fillings or jam from these berries. And most of all they like to eat kangaroos.
As for the seeds of blue quandong, they are widely used in the culture of the aborigines - they are used to make rosary, as well as cute bracelets, necklaces and many other jewelry.
The chemical composition of this culture is currently not well understood, but it is assumed that these berries are rich in tannins, B vitamins, various mineral elements, pectins, anthocyanins, organic acids and the vital body ascorbic acid.
Contraindications
Since blue kwandong berries contain a fairly large amount of organic acids, people with high acidity of gastric juice should refrain from using them. Individual intolerance is also quite likely.
Growing and caring
Blue Kwandong is incredibly moisture-loving and thermophilic, and it will feel best in swampy forest areas. Just like all other tropical rainforest vegetation, it grows very quickly.
