Toadflax can be both a perennial and an annual plant. This plant is especially valuable due to its amazingly beautiful decorative flowering. In total, there are about one hundred and fifty different species of this plant in the genus. However, the greatest interest of gardeners is the Moroccan, Alpine and common toadflax.
The height of one bush can fluctuate between ten centimeters and one meter, the actual height will depend on the type of toadflax. Flowers can be colored in white and yellow, as well as pink, purple and crimson tones. On the lip of this plant, bright blotches are noted. Outwardly, this plant is very reminiscent of a snapdragon. The plant will bloom for only two months and will take about the second half of the summer season. It should be noted that the toadflax very often attracts numerous butterflies. At the same time, it is important to remember that some types of toadflax have very valuable medicinal properties and are widely used in folk medicine.
Description of the features of care and cultivation of toadflax
Growing this plant will require light, fertile and fairly well-drained soil, the reaction of which should be neutral. It should be noted that it is very important that no moisture stagnation occurs. For planting, it is recommended to choose a sunny or slightly shaded place.
Frequent watering is not required for this plant: in principle, flaxseed can develop favorably without watering even during the entire summer period. In summer, toadflax may have sufficient precipitation. For the winter period of time, the plant should not provide any shelter: it is worth noting that the common toadflax will be able to adequately endure even the most severe and cold winters.
Toadflax propagation
Reproduction of this plant occurs through seeds. Seeds should be planted in April and boxes are required. These boxes should be filled with a loose but highly nutritious substrate. Seeds need preliminary stratification, while the temperature regime should be kept at around plus five degrees. This stratification should take place over a period of at least two or three months. As for the common toadflax, this plant is also capable of perfectly multiplying by self-sowing. The seeds do not need to be buried very deeply, but they should be germinated at room temperature, while the planting should be in a bright place. When the seedlings grow up, they will need to be thinned out. Already at the very end of May, seedlings can be planted in open ground, as for the distance between seedlings, this value will be directly dependent on the height of the bush itself.
A variety of this plant, such as alpine toadflax, is often grown as an ampelous plant. In addition, gardeners very often use this plant when creating alpine slides or as decoration and landscaping of fences and stone gazebos. It is noteworthy that toadflax is able to grow well in the cracks that are located between the stones. As for the other types of toadflax, the taller plants are very often used in mixed flower beds. This plant looks great with carnation, ursinia and lychnis. It is recommended to plant medium-sized varieties of toadflax along the garden paths. Sometimes gardeners also make flower beds from various varieties of this plant: such flower beds look especially bright, colorful and spectacular.
Subject to fairly simple growing measures, this plant will delight you with its amazing beauty.
