Prince (lat. Rubus arcticus) - a genus of herbaceous plants or dwarf shrubs of the Pink family. The plant is known under the names glade, drupe, meadow, mamura, khokhlushka, noon.
Spreading
Under natural conditions, the prince is found in the temperate zone of the Northern Hemisphere. Typical places of growth are forb meadows, forests, banks of streams and rivers, thickets of bushes, swamps and tundra. On the territory of Russia, the princess is grown in the Urals, Siberia, the Caucasus and the Far East.
Today, as a result of the merciless deforestation, the prince is gradually disappearing from the natural area. But agronomists do not sit still, and introduce the prince into culture as a valuable decorative and winter-hardy plant with healing and tasty fruits. And it is not in vain, because the princess has been appreciated by people for hundreds of years for its unique aroma and taste, reminiscent of both pineapple and raspberry. Surprisingly, the prince's berries were on a par with sable skins for the price.
Characteristics of culture
The princess is a perennial herb or shrub up to 30 cm high. The roots of the princess are thin, creeping, cord-like, the bulk of the roots lies at a depth of 10-15 cm from the soil surface. Leaves are green, wrinkled, trifoliate, petiolate, equipped with two stipules. Flowers are single, bisexual, apical, five-petal, up to 2 cm in diameter. Unisexual flowers are less common.
The fruit is a juicy polystyrene, consists of 25-50 fruitlets, may be cherry or purple in color with a bluish bloom. On average, the weight of one fruit is 1-2 g. Every year, the aboveground part of the plants dies off, and in the spring new shoots form from the buds. The princess blooms at the end of May, flowering stretches to 35 days. On one bush you can find both berries and flowers.
Growing conditions
Soils for growing the princess are preferable sandy and loose peaty, fertile, moderately moist with a pH of 3, 2-6, 2. The princess is a shade-loving culture, has a negative attitude to intensely lit areas, develops best in semi-shaded areas, as well as near the walls of houses, outbuildings and under the crowns of trees.
Reproduction and planting
The princess is propagated by seeds, dividing the bush, root suckers and cuttings. Seeds are sown immediately after harvest as they are very poorly stored. Seeds harvested a year earlier have a low germination rate - from 5 to 7%. Sow the culture into moist soil. Immediately after sowing, the ridges are mulched with a thick layer of peat or humus. It is not forbidden to sow the prince in seedling boxes, which are subsequently placed under the snow cover.
The easiest way to reproduce is by dividing the bush. Perennial bushes with about 200 shoots are divided into parts, each of which is equipped with its own roots and shoots. The planting is carried out with a lump of earth at a distance of 25-30 cm from each other. The row spacing is 80-100 cm. It is advisable to carry out such a procedure in late April - early May, or in September.
An effective way of propagation by root cuttings. Cut the cuttings from the roots about 9-10 cm long. Each cutting should have at least five buds. Cuttings are planted to a depth of 4-5 cm. Next spring, new shoots are formed from the buds, the number of which increases every year. Full yields of berries with this method of reproduction can be obtained in the third year.
The plot for the culture is prepared in advance: the soil is dug up onto a full bayonet of a shovel, rotted manure or humus, sifted river sand, tons of peat, superphosphate, potash salt and wood ash are introduced. When digging, it is important to select all rhizome weeds, otherwise they will not allow the princess to develop normally. The ridges are formed with a width of 100-110 cm. Before planting, the soil is treated with a weak solution of potassium permanganate.
Care
Caring for the princess consists in weeding, fertilizing, watering and loosening the aisles. Top dressing is carried out once a year in early spring, and you can use both mineral and organic fertilizers, but better in liquid form. Watering is carried out regularly, but without waterlogging. Weeding is especially important at the initial stage of the princess's development.
