Gardening is a whole world, with which the more you get to know, the more you are surprised - how interesting it is! Especially novice gardeners make a lot of discoveries for themselves. We offer you to get acquainted with some interesting and useful information about the garden, which will interest not only the discoverers, but, possibly, also experienced gardeners
1. A sunflower blooms with more than one flower, as it might seem at first glance: in its center, framed with classic yellow petals, there are from 1 to 2 thousand separate small flowers.
2. If you take one teaspoon of soil, then the number of microorganisms contained in it will be greater than the number of people inhabiting our planet. These organisms in the soil are needed to saturate it with nutrients.
3. It turns out that plants distinguish sounds. Their growth is influenced by various sound vibrations - music, voices. According to the research results, in the greenhouse, where classical melodies were periodically sounded, the plants grew noticeably faster than the same varieties in the same, but soundless greenhouse.
4. It may seem incredible, but butterflies are more attracted not by beautiful flowers, but by weeds. Beautiful flowers, fragrant with aroma and rich in nectar, are more popular with bees than butterflies. Butterflies love clover and dandelion.
5. A weak baking soda solution promotes the growth of sweet tomatoes. To do this, it is necessary to regularly sprinkle a soda solution on the soil where the tomatoes grow - this will reduce the acidity of the soil, as a result of which the tomatoes will grow sweet.
6. Most fruits and berries are rosaceous. This applies to apple, pear, peach, cherry, raspberry and strawberry - they are considered relatives of beautiful roses.
7. With the right combination, orchids get the scent of a delicious dessert. It turns out that Oncidum hyrbrid orchids smell like chocolate, some orchids smell like vanilla, Cymbidium gold Elf smells like lemon, and Phalaenopsis violacea smells like cinnamon. If you combine different types of orchids, you get a magnificent winter garden that smells of desserts.
8. If you wish, you can grow hydrangeas by artificially changing their colors. But for this you need to change the pH level of the soil. If the soil is alkaline, the flowers will grow pink, and with acidic soil, blue. In order for the flowers to grow blue, organic matter must be added to the soil - eggshells and coffee grounds. The color will not change immediately, but gradually.
9. You don't have to bother with composting. For fertilizing the soil, the following are good: coffee grounds, eggshells, chopped banana peels and other organic substances.
10. It turns out that there are varieties of potatoes that the Colorado potato beetle does not like. The taste and smell of modern transgenic potatoes, as well as its wild relative, the Chaco potato, scares the beetle away. The latter grows in Argentina - on its spacious savannas, between the steppe grasses. It is a short plant (20-40 cm) with blue flowers. Heart-leaved potatoes, resistant to parasitic fungi, grow on the rocks of Mexico. Its plants are also short, and the tubers resemble plums in size.
11. Not all gardeners know that pollinating insects are attracted by the strongest and most viable plants. Insect pests, on the other hand, love to settle on weakened, oppressed plants. After pollination, strong plants promote healthy and abundant offspring. Weakened plants do not leave offspring, since they are found and destroyed by leaf beetles, aphids and other pests. It has been proven that vegetables and fruits that are in excellent condition are unattractive to pests because the structure of the leaves does not lend themselves to their teeth.
12. There are crops, the leaves of which have powerful cuticles or are protected by a waxy coating. Other crops have protective microvilli on the leaves that reliably protect them from pests. If you create unfavorable conditions for plants, they will be subject to stresses - food, water, light, heat or other. At this moment, they need emergency support, otherwise they become weaker, the structure of their leaves changes, the cuticle or a layer of wax plaque becomes thin, and the protective villi fall off. This makes the plants defenseless, and pests that are close to them and await their weakening quickly begin to eat them.
