Gleditsia vulgaris is one of the plants of a family called legumes, in Latin the name of this plant will sound like this: Gleditsia triacanthos L. As for the name of the family of common gleditsia itself, in Latin it will be like this: Fabaceae Lindl.

Description of common gleditsia

Gleditsia vulgaris is a tree that can reach a height of about forty meters. The root system of this plant is located superficially, while such a system is covered with finely cracked grass, painted in gray-brown tones. The branches of this plant are covered with eroded dark brown shiny spines, the length of which will be about ten centimeters. The leaves are either simple or double-pinnate, and they will also be endowed with elongated-lanceolate and obscure-peeled leaflets. The flowers will be colored yellow-green, they are dioecious and polysymmetric. Such flowers are collected in relatively few clusters at the very base of the leaves. The calyx of Gleditsia vulgaris consists of five sepals, which grow together to half, the corolla is non-accrete and five-petal. There are only ten stamens of this plant, and the pistil is made up of one carpel. The fruit of Gleditsia vulgaris will be flat, multi-fruited, and also curved and open at two seams. Such a fruit is colored in dark brown tones.

The flowering of Gleditsia vulgaris occurs in the period from May to June. In this case, the ripening of the fruit occurs approximately in the month of September-October. This plant is native to North America. At the same time, the plant can very often be found in the southern regions of both Ukraine and Russia. It is noteworthy that common gleditsia is also a honey plant.

Description of the medicinal properties of gleditsia vulgaris

Gleditsia vulgaris is endowed with quite valuable medicinal properties, while it is recommended to use ripe fruits and leaves, as well as pods of ripe fruits for medicinal purposes. fruits should be harvested when the pod is colored in dark colors and bursts easily. such fruits should be dried at a temperature of about fifty to sixty degrees, or simply in the open air. The leaves of this plant should be harvested in the first half of the summer season in dry, sunny weather, and dried in the shade, while laying out in a rather thin layer and stirring from time to time. The raw material of this plant will be ready when the petioles break when bent rather than bending.

The fruits of this plant contain triterpene saponins, flavonoids, vitamin C, as well as tannins and mucous substances and the alkaloid triankatine. The pods of Gleditsia vulgaris will contain tannins, anthraglycosides and vitamin K. The alkaloid triacanthine will have an antispasmodic effect on smooth muscles, and will also expand blood vessels and stimulate the respiratory center, and besides this, it will also lower blood pressure. The same anthraglycosides found in the pods of the fruit will have a laxative effect in chronic constipation.

As for traditional medicine, decoctions of fruits, leaves, and pods are quite widespread here. Such funds are recommended for use in chronic gastritis, gastric ulcer and duodenal ulcer, as well as colitis, constipation and chronic inflammation of the gallbladder. Most often, it is recommended to use a decoction of the fruits of Gleditsia vulgaris, however, it should be remembered that large doses of saponins can cause poisoning. Decoction of fruits and fruit pods is effective for chronic constipation.
