Marsh iris is a hydrochloric plant, the spread of its seeds occurs with the help of water. Various water birds also contribute to their distribution. Getting into the water, the seeds of the plant do not drown for a long time, since they are endowed with a non-wettable peel and have small air cavities between the endosperm of the seed and the peel.
Although marsh iris is considered a purely coastal plant, with a temporary increase in the water level in water bodies, it is quite capable of withstanding even prolonged flooding. In addition, its landing (at a depth of 30 - 40 cm) in water bodies is also permissible.
How to grow
Planting marsh iris will not be difficult. As a rule, it is planted on damp shores or in shallow water. Wild forms of the plant reproduce with surprising ease by sowing seeds in the fall - the seeds are sown as deep as possible (1, 5 - 2 cm) so that after watering or rain they cannot float to the soil surface. A number of varieties can be easily propagated with the help of parts of rhizomes bearing buds. The best time to plant marsh iris is from August to September. True, initially it is better to plant the roots of the plant in containers to enable them to germinate better. At the same time, the roots and leaves are shortened by a third. And once every 5 - 7 years, it is recommended to plant the bushes. The ideal soil for growing marsh iris is organic soil.
It is desirable that the reservoir, near which it is planned to plant marsh iris, is located in a shady area. However, if such a place cannot be found, it is also okay: this plant grows well in bright places with an abundance of sun. In no case should the soil dry out - moisture is very important for marsh iris, its lowering has a very strong effect on flowering. If possible, the place where beautiful flowers will grow should be protected from strong winds.
In general, this beautiful plant is quite unpretentious in care. Peduncles at the end of the flowering of the marsh iris should be removed, and before the onset of winter, the leaves are also cut off. If grown on humus-rich soils, then it is able, especially in rainy years, to develop leaves up to two meters high.
Periodically, fertilizers containing phosphorus and potassium should be applied to the soil on which marsh iris is grown. Such dressings are especially important in the fall, so that the plant does not enter weakened during the winter season. Marsh iris is very resistant to cold weather and does not need additional shelter. As for pests, most often it can be affected by gladiolus thrips, which is harmful to the leaves.
