Sandy gelichrysum (lat. Helichrysum arenarium) - a representative of the genus Gelikhrizum of the Asteraceae family. Other names are sandy seedless, Sandy gold flower, Zolotistka, Sun gold, Dried flowers. The last name most fully reveals the plant, because it is actively used in the preparation of winter bouquets, which can boast of excellent durability. In nature, the species is distributed mainly in Europe; it can also be captured in the countries of Central Asia and the Caucasus. Typical habitats are dunes, pine forests, steppes, semi-deserts, hillsides and areas with sandy soil.

Characteristics of culture

Sandy gelikhrizum is represented by perennial plants no more than 60 cm in height, endowed with a straight simple stem and a short woody rhizome of black-brown color. The foliage, in turn, is pubescent, alternate, in length does not exceed 6 cm. The lower foliage has a spatulate or obovate shape, the middle and upper ones are linear. It should be noted the presence of oblong spatulate foliage that forms on the sterile shoots of the plant.

Inflorescences of sandy gelichrizum in the form of baskets. They form at the top of the stem and look like a ball. As a rule, more than 30 tubular flowers are formed; they have a yellow or yellow-orange color. The leaves of the envelope are not densely arranged, they form up to six rows, the leaves themselves are more than 40. They are characterized by a rich lemon, yellow or orange color. The shape of the leaves is elliptical or obovate, pubescence is possible along the back.

The fruit is represented by small oblong achenes, not exceeding 1.5 mm in length. They are characterized by a brown or dark brown color and the presence of a small tuft bearing yellowish serrated hairs. The seeds are small, they are formed in huge quantities. The flowering culture is observed throughout the summer, until the end of August. Sandy gelikhrizum enters fruiting in the third decade of August - the second decade of September. The flowering period of each basket is 2 weeks.

Sandy gelikhrizum is used not only for drawing up winter and summer bouquets. He also firmly established his niche in traditional medicine. Due to the presence of a large amount of resin acids, the plant boasts antibacterial properties, therefore it is used to treat many diseases, in particular those associated with the gallbladder. In addition, the plant is able to minimize the growth of dangerous microorganisms, such as staphylococci. The plant has shown its superiority in the treatment of gastritis. Also, its infusion is recommended for frequent constipation, liver and kidney diseases.
