Oriental hyacinth (lat. Hyacinthus orientalis) - a flowering plant; a representative of the genus Hyacinth, belonging to the Asparagus family (Latin Asparagaceae). The Mediterranean is considered to be the birthplace of culture. Today, the species in question is actively cultivated in European countries, Russia, the USA and other parts of the world.
Characteristics of culture
Oriental hyacinth is represented by perennial bulbous plants that form a cylindrical stem during growth, reaching a height of 50-60 cm and bearing grooved smooth foliage of a rich green color. The bulbs of the species under consideration have a spherical, narrow-conical, ovoid or wide cone-shaped shape, varying in diameter from 3 to 8 cm, covered with numerous scales (covering and storing) of a wide variety of colors.
The flowers are fragrant, bell-shaped, remarkable both in appearance and in color. Depending on the variety, they can be white, purple, lilac, pink, blue-violet and blue. There are both simple and terry forms. The latter are very popular among gardeners. Flowers are collected in racemose inflorescences of 10-30 flowers, sometimes more. Flowering is observed in the third decade of May. The flowering period is 1-2 weeks. Fruiting of Eastern hyacinth is abundant, the fruit is represented by rounded capsules.
Application
Due to the abundant and bright flowering, oriental hyacinth and its many varieties have won the hearts of many gardeners and florists. It looks great both singly and in groups. Oriental hyacinth fits especially well into symmetrical flower beds. The culture is also suitable for growing in containers and large flowerpots, which can be used to decorate the porch of the house, garden paths, patios and gazebos. After flowering, hyacinths lose their former beauty, so it is recommended to combine them with annual or perennial flower crops that hide withered greenery.
It should be noted that oriental hyacinth has found application not only in ornamental gardening. He is actively used in alternative medicine. The thing is that in its composition there is a healing substance called colchicine - a plant cytostatic that is effective against diseases of tissues and joints caused by metabolic disorders in the human body (otherwise gout). The aboveground part of the hyacinth is used only externally, since the plant is poisonous. If it enters the stomach, it causes disturbances in the gastrointestinal tract and vomiting. Often, oriental hyacinth is used in modern cosmetology for the production of products that are effective against wrinkles and other age-related changes.

* Gipsy Queen is a variety characterized by short plants bearing salmon or apricot flowers.
* Ametist (Amethyst) - the variety is represented by plants not exceeding 25-30 cm in height, with light purple flowers, collected in dense cylindrical brushes of 20 pieces.
* Woodstock (Woodstock) - a variety famous for low plants, with dark purple flowers, distinguished by excellent and memorable aromas, developing over long distances.
* Bismark (Bismarck) - the variety is characterized by undersized plants bearing pale purple flowers, collected in not too dense cylindrical brushes of 25 pieces.
* Delft Blue (Delft Blue) - the variety is represented by plants up to 30 cm high with bluish-lilac flowers. Through numerous experiments, 11 varieties were obtained on its basis.
* General de Wet (General de Wet) - the variety is distinguished by low plants, above which rise white-pink flowers, collected in loose brushes. Boasts early flowering. In the southern regions, it blooms in the second decade of April.
