Choosing a restoration method
There are many options that can be used to update furniture: painting, pasting, painting, decorative onlays, decoupage, and more. For example: the neighborhood with dark furniture requires the selection of a suitable tone or finishing with details of the same color. The means of harmony is a similar ornament or structure of materials.
Wallpaper
A fast, cheap, radical method that does not require special skill and imagination. Non-woven or vinyl wallpaper is ideal for such an event. The cabinet is pasted over in whole or in part (only doors). You can compose several types of coatings, create different texture and color compositions.
If you need to expand the space, then you need wallpaper that matches the wall palette. In this case, it is imperative to highlight the outline of the dimensions. For this, only the middle of the door panels is decorated, the elements of the corner frames are not affected.
You need to know that a wardrobe of bright colors will look better on light walls. Against the background of an active pattern, plain outlines are acceptable: small, not particularly prominent ornament, blotches. A muted, monochromatic palette of walls gives free rein to imagination - you can use any tones and patterns.
In the process of pasting, glue for non-woven substrates is used, to which it is recommended to add PVA. If we talk about self-adhesive films, then they are chosen mainly with wood imitation. In this case, careful preparation of the surface is needed: elimination of bumps, roughness, grinding. There is a possibility of distortion, blistering and wrinkling.
Photos
The ideal surface for photo use would be polished. If the cabinet has a painted or varnished appearance, then before work you need to clean the selected places with a sandpaper, cover with a primer.
When using regular photos, consider the principle of collage. For registration, you need to have several photographs of non-standard sizes (30 * 40; 25 * 35; 40 * 50), which can be specially ordered. This decor involves the use of photowall-paper.
In any case, the edging of the cabinet must be solid (brown, white, red, etc.). The edges can be coated with acrylic or other paint. After the pasted photographs have dried completely, the entire product is covered with colorless varnish.
Dye
A newly painted cabinet always takes on a new look. A drastic color change comes with some complications. It is necessary not only to prepare the surface (grind, clean), a dark cabinet cannot be immediately made light. Preliminary work includes filling of depressions, defects and cracks with putty, as well as 2-3 coats of furniture primer. Only after these operations a new color is applied using a spray gun.
A rich color is achieved with a two-layer overlay. An additional coating of furniture varnish gives a decorative look. Hard-to-reach places are painted with a foam sponge using the "wetting" method.
Mirrors
Installation of mirrors does not require preliminary restoration actions and hides defects well. This technique expands the space. Mirror panels are easily attached to doors with liquid nails or strips.
Closet with fabric decor
If a stable, sturdy cabinet has severe external damage, this can be repaired with drapery. The doors and sides are covered with fabric. This method also makes it possible to often replace boring colors with new ones.
The work progress consists of several stages. For the base of the coating, a synthetic winterizer or a thin layer of foam rubber must be attached to the surface. After that, pieces of fabric are cut out, with the calculation of fastening on the inner surface. The overlap is kept 7-10 cm, the fabric is fixed with a stapler or glue. The corners are processed using the steering wheel technique or edging is made from specially cut strips.
The fabric should match the wallpaper palette, in harmony with the dominant color and interior details. Dense or laminated fabrics stretch better and do not deform in the future. The recommended types are brocade, teak, damask, calico, moire, organza, taffeta, tweed.
