Shade fingernail (lat. Dactylorhiza umbrosa) is a herbaceous perennial plant of the genus Dactylorhiza (Latin Dactylorhiza), belonging to the Orchid family (Latin Orchidaceae). It is a short orchid growing on the ground. The sturdy stem is covered with broad-lanceolate monotonous green leaves that do not have patterns on the surface of the leaf plate. Traditional orchid miniature flowers, forming a dense spike-shaped inflorescence, are equipped with green bracts sticking out on the peduncle with their sharp tips among the dense floral community. The basis of the perennial plant is the roots with tubers, which is why the plant fell into the genus Dactyloriza. Tubers have healing powers.

What's in your name

The genus of plants "Dactylorhiza" was created by botanists by dividing the species of the genus Orchis (Latin Orchis), because over time, specific elements were discovered and systematized that distinguish plants placed in a new genus from plants of the genus Orchis. If in plants of the genus "Orchis" the root tubers had the shape of "testicles", which was the reason for the name of the genus, then the tubers of plants transferred to the newly created genus "Dactyloriza" had tubers, the shape of which resembled a human hand with fingers, which became the basis for such a genus name.

The initial assignment of plants to the genus "Orchis" (Latin Orchis), of course, introduced some confusion with the names, and therefore in the floriculture literature the described plant is sometimes called by the old name -"

Shady orchis (Lat. Orchis umbrosa).

In addition, like many related plants, there are many synonymous names for the Shaggy Finger, which bring their share of confusion and empty disputes among flower growers. Among them are the following: "Salt Orchis", "Sanasunite Orchis", "Sanasunite Orchis", "Kochi Palchakorennik", "Sanasunite Orchis".

Shade fingernail is a herb, the height of which, depending on living conditions, varies from fifteen to forty-five centimeters.

The basis of the perennial plant is the root system with lobed tubers, divided into three to six parts. From it, a thick, erect stem, hollow, but strong, appears on the surface of the earth.

Green leaves, on the surface of which there are no patterns, as in other species of the genus, have a lanceolate shape with a pointed end. One plant has four to eight leaves.

The stem is crowned with a multi-flowered inflorescence, consisting of miniature flowers characteristic of orchids. The rounded-rhombic lip does not have pronounced lobes and is painted in pink or violet-purple shades with a whitish spot at the base. Slightly bent, cylindrical at the base, the spur is up to fifteen millimeters long. Flowering occurs in late spring and early summer. The inflorescence is penetrated with green bracts, sometimes with a slight shade of purple or red, the sharp tips of which peep out between the flowers, giving the impression of an elegant New Year tree.

Area

The shaggy fingerling loves height and humidity, and therefore it can be found in wet meadows spread out in mountain valleys. In Russia, it grows in the mountains of Altai, Chita region, in the highlands of the Russian republics: Buryatia and Tyva.

Use and healing abilities

Shade palm-root is a very picturesque plant that will perfectly fit among the plants of a rocky garden with moist, but not damp soil.

The tubers of the plant are rich in useful components used by traditional healers to free the kidneys from stones; in the treatment of gastritis; with paralysis; and also in cases when it is required to stop bleeding.
