Curly parsley (Latin Petroselinum crispum) - one of the most famous and widespread species of the genus Parsley of the Umbrella family (lat. Apiaceae). The species is famous for its variety of forms and varieties, which can please with an extraordinary taste. In nature, curly parsley is found in the Mediterranean, it grows mainly on the seashore. Another name is curly parsley.

Characteristics of culture

Curly parsley is represented by biennial herbaceous plants reaching a height of 30 cm. There are also tall varieties in culture, exceeding 70-90 cm in height. The root of the culture under consideration is fusiform, thickened, not too branched. The stem is straight, rather branched, topped with shiny, leathery, double-pinnately dissected foliage of a dark green or green color. Flowers are yellowish or greenish-yellow, small. The fruits are oblong, ovoid. Flowering occurs in mid-summer, usually in late June - early July, depending on climatic conditions.

Common varieties

Among the most common varieties of curly parsley, the variety referred to as "Beads" should be noted. It is characterized by delicate and very fragrant foliage, as well as early ripening, as a rule, the first harvest is carried out 45 days after sowing. The Bogatyr variety is no less popular. It is famous for the abundance of leaf mass and the ability to develop normally in shaded areas.

It is impossible not to mention the "Astra" variety. Its foliage is characterized by a strong curliness. By the way, in the process of growth, plants form a semi-raised and rather dense rosette, which grows quickly even after cutting. The Esmeralda variety can boast of similar properties. It belongs to varieties of medium ripeness, with proper care and a favorable climate, for the first cut from one plant, you can get more than 50 g of greens.

Growing features

Growing curly parsley is a simple process that can be controlled even by novice gardeners. It is preferable to plant a crop in well-lit areas endowed with fertile, moderately moist and loose soil. Curly parsley has a negative attitude to clay, heavy, saline and waterlogged soils. The culture does not like too shady places, but in areas with diffused light, that is, under the crowns of trees with a sparse crown, it forms a small leaf mass, often becomes smaller.

Seeds for sowing are used only fresh, those that have been stored for more than two years for sowing are not recommended. Sowing, in turn, is carried out directly into the open ground, because almost all species of the genus Parsley are cold-resistant, and the representative in question is no exception. By the way, sowing can be carried out both before winter and in early spring, however, with the first method, the leaf mass gains strength faster.

Seeds germinate at a temperature of 3-5C, while the seedlings can withstand a short-term drop in temperatures to -7C without any problems. When sowing, it is important to observe the optimal distance between rows, equal to 15-20 cm. In the process of growth, thinning should be carried out, in the density of plants it is difficult to develop, it is better to immediately sow with a step of at least 5 cm and not too deep, ideally to a depth of 1, 5 cm.

Due to the fact that parsley has a rich aroma, it is able to scare off many pests, therefore it is recommended to place it near the beds with tomatoes, cabbage, carrots, radishes and radishes. It is not forbidden to plant a crop next to berry crops, for example, strawberries and strawberries, it, in turn, also scares off ants and aphids. But pumpkin, zucchini and lettuce for culture are not the best allies, it is better to avoid such contacts.
