Barclay long-leaved lives in nature in the waters of Burma, Southern Thailand, Sumatra, New Guinea, Andaman Islands and Hindustan. It grows mainly in sunny and semi-shaded areas in fast flowing streams. This heat-loving beauty is excellent for keeping in aquarium conditions and serves as an excellent decoration for aquariums. However, she is quite demanding to the conditions of detention, and you need to be prepared for this
Getting to know the plant
Rhizomes in Barclay long-leaved can be both tuberous and elongated and thin. The leaf petioles grow up to twenty centimeters long, and the bizarre and incredibly cute leaves are collected in compact rosettes. The height of the whole plant often reaches fifty to sixty centimeters.
The leaf blades of long-leaved barclay are elongated on the front side, scarious and bare, and slightly pimply on the back. The leaves of this beautiful plant are characterized by an extraordinary silky sheen. And the peduncles of this water beauty often reach half a meter in length. Each plant is also endowed with several rows of stamens (fertile and sterile).
There are two varieties of long-leaved barclay - in the first, the leaves are painted in neutral green tones, and in the second, in reddish. In this regard, the first variety is called "green-leaved", and the second - "red-leaved".
How to grow
For growing in aquariums, barclay long-leaved will be quite suitable. It grows in them all year round, and quite evenly. However, it is important to know that this water beauty is quite capricious and demanding to care for.
A mild aquatic environment with an acidic reaction, as well as temperatures ranging from twenty-five to twenty-eight degrees, are the best parameters for growing Barclay longifolia. In principle, water with a slightly alkaline reaction is also quite acceptable. If the thermometer drops below twenty-four degrees, the growth of the heat-loving beauty often stops, and the plant itself can easily die.
The soil for a demanding aquatic inhabitant should be selected enriched with various nutrients. A clay additive is also an excellent solution. The root system of a heat-loving beauty is extremely sensitive to any damage, so it is important to try to use small pebbles or coarse river sand as a substrate. And the siltation of the soil should be low.
Light, of course, is necessary for long-leaved barclaye for comfortable growth, but its intensity does not really matter. Meanwhile, from too intense and directly incident light, the thermophilic aquatic inhabitant should be shaded. To this end, you can simply place a wonderful plant in the shade of such tall green pets as anubias or echinodorus. Suitable for shading barclay long-leaved and plants floating on the water surface. Incandescent lamps or fluorescent lamps are purchased as additional artificial lighting. You can also combine these two light sources. Experienced aquarists strongly recommend the use of incandescent lamps - the fact is that the color of the leaves of the demanding aquatic beauty becomes much brighter.
It is also important to know that snails love to feast on the leaves of barclay long-leaved placed in aquariums - this factor must be taken into account when growing it.
The capricious beauty reproduces mainly by seeds, and its seed reproduction is quite possible even in the underwater state - the flowers formed in underwater conditions give seeds no worse than above-water ones. To begin with, such seeds germinate a little in good light. Sometimes long-leaved barclay is transplanted into pots so that it grows a little slower and does not become too large. Nevertheless, especially large specimens can be planted with a ladder. They can also be used as a solitaire - in this form they will look very original and incredibly aesthetically pleasing.
