Bright garden beds invariably delight our eyes - the contemplation of beautiful flowers perfectly helps to escape from the everyday hustle and bustle! But not every summer resident can afford to regularly take care of the flower beds - alas, but modern realities are such that many of us visit our plots only occasionally and “on short visits”. But there are also unpretentious long-flowering perennials - having planted them on your site, you can completely not bother with too painstaking care or new plantings, and at the same time, beautiful plants will delight the eyes for more than one year! What plants are really worth paying attention to?
For sunny areas
For planting in sunny areas, such sun lovers as brilliant rudbeckia, oak sage and various types of coreopsis are perfect. Especially often in modern summer cottages, you can see two types of coreopsis - lanceolate coreopsis and large-flowered coreopsis. The winter hardiness of these two species, which came to us from the USA, is so high that they can be grown without special fears even in the middle lane! The first golden yellow flowers of coreopsis usually appear in June, and this amazing plant blooms until the very end of summer!
Argirantemum shrub will bloom tirelessly, starting from May until late autumn, and even closer to the end of spring, osteospermum begins to bloom - the latter, by the way, overwinters wonderfully in southern latitudes even in open ground!
It blooms perfectly in sunny areas and such an unpretentious beauty as the seaside lobularia. And for residents of the southern regions, this plant will generally become a real find, because there it will delight with its flowering from May to December! And, by the way, as a perennial, Seaside Lobularia is grown only in the south - in all other regions it grows like an annual.
Kentrantus, also known as sporflower or centrantus red, is another great solution for a sunny site. The plant is very spectacular, and at home, in the Mediterranean, it is often called the red valerian (however, it is also a representative of the Valerian family). The centrantus will bloom from May until the very end of the summer season, and at the same time it is completely unpretentious in care and grows well even in very cramped conditions.
For shady and semi-shaded areas
Owners of areas located in partial shade or even in the shade should not be upset at all - and there are excellent options for long-flowering perennials for them too! For example, here you can safely plant astilba, the richest assortment of varieties of which will impress even the most discerning gardeners. And as a ground cover plant, it makes sense to plant the Chinese dwarf astilba in the shade or partial shade, which often blooms until October, in addition, Fassen's catnip will also delight with its magnificent flowering.
Also, in conditions of shade or partial shade, you can plant the Macedonian korostavnik, gypsophila paniculata, gaura, as well as catnip and some varieties of scabiosa or evening primrose.
Summer residents, who do not have the time and opportunity to constantly look after their flower beds, do not have to strive to plant as many different species and varieties of plants as possible on the site - it is quite enough to opt for two or three species, and sometimes monoplants also look extremely rare spectacularly!
As for care, in the case of the above plants, it will be minimal: it is enough to cut dry shoots in the spring, sometimes water and feed these plants, and periodically loosen the soil and weed out weeds.
And what long-flowering perennials do you grow on your site?
