Is it possible to paint decorative crushed stone on your own, how exactly to do it, if possible, and how difficult will this task be in practice?
The main types of decorative crushed stone
Decorative crushed stone is nothing more than crushed natural stone. Depending on the breed, such a stone can differ significantly both in strength and in its color. Most often, the following breeds are used to make colored crumbs:
Diorite and serpentinite. From them, crushed stone of brown, black, dark gray and dark green shades is obtained.
Basalt and gray granite. They are the main raw material for the production of gray crushed stone.
Serpentine, colored marble, limestone, sandstone, quartz and granite. These materials allow you to get such bright shades as pink, blue, red, olive and so on.
Quartz, limestone and pale marble. Ideal for producing white crushed stone.
Of course, decorative crushed stone can differ not only in color, but also in its shape, as well as in the size of the fraction. Depending on the size, decorative crushed stone can be large (more than 40 mm), medium (15 - 25 mm) or small (from 1 to 15 mm). And depending on the shape, it is subdivided into cubic, round, flat, conical and trapezoidal.
Crumbs made of granite or marble, painted with waterproof acrylic polymers, are now quite actively used - as a rule, such material is purchased to create bright and rich design elements that can become excellent accents for the entire composition as a whole. And for the design of large-scale areas, crushed stone of natural color is usually used, and its price is much more acceptable.
Can you paint the crushed stone yourself?
Of course! And this will save a lot of money on the purchase of ready-made colored options! The most suitable for staining is considered to be screening with a fraction of 10 to 30 mm - it is characterized by a higher decorative effect. In general, you can paint rubble of absolutely any size - in this case, everything will depend solely on the desire and on the design decision!
In order to paint the crushed stone with the highest quality, first it should be thoroughly washed from the remnants of dust and sand, and also thoroughly dried - the moisture content of the washed and ready-to-paint material should be no more than twenty percent of the total specific gravity.
As for the painting tools, in this case you will have to acquire a vibrating sieve, a drying tray, a concrete mixer and a washing grate. And, of course, you can't do without painting material, which must be of high quality! It is especially important that it can boast of a sufficiently high resistance to moisture and ultraviolet rays! As a rule, in most cases, acrylic paints, water-dispersed or alkyd, are purchased for staining crushed stone.
To paint the crushed stone, first it is poured into a concrete mixer, making sure that it is filled to about two-thirds of the total volume. Then the concrete mixer is turned on and the crushed stone is heated with a gas burner - as a result, its temperature should be in the range from forty to sixty degrees. After that, paint is poured onto the prepared crumb from above, observing the percentage to the volume of crushed stone at 20:80 or 30:70. Then the concrete mixer is turned on again and left in this form for forty to sixty minutes - as a rule, this time is quite enough for all the edges of the pebbles to have time to evenly paint over!
If you observe all the above proportions as accurately as possible, then the output should be almost dry decorative material. True, before pouring the painted crushed stone into storage containers or immediately putting it into operation, it will not hurt to additionally dry it by placing all the resulting material in a thin layer on a drying tray and leaving it in the open air until it dries completely!
